Listen we don't have to split the hair or play "But both sides" game.
The Democrats, as wrong as they can be, have a basic grasp on reality as concept and aren't actively engage in open warfare with it.
Both sides are the same in one regard. A successful political party's first priority is gaining power. That is as true of the Dems as the Reps as the Tories as whatever successful political party you can name.
Unless you think the dems were all homophobes prior to about 2012 or so. Or that forgiving the debt of the top 1/3 of society is some kind of principled stand or the green new deal is some kind of environmental thing or bombing the hell out of Libya was principled or whatever. Political parties are never going to be more than the enemy or your enemy. Its remains baffling to me how many folks don't understand that.
Sure, the vast majority of the GOP has just rolled over for Trump and Trumpism, very little of which was in their platform prior to 2016. They are awful, I admit, but to the extent that Biden or Harris or any other Dem is a principled actor, That's just naive. Harris particularly was tough on crime long after it was justifiable, primarily because prison guard unions in CA are a powerful political force. Much more effective at lobbying that the private prison industry that is so vilified for lobbying for the same policies.
People forget, and it's both hilarious and depressing in hindsight now, but prior to his win Trump was such a weird choice for a Republican Candidate that legit conspiracy theories were starting to pop up that he was a plant, someone the Democrats convinced to run as a Republican to make a candidate so abjectly un-electable that Hillary would coast to a easy victory. Even Jeb Bush brought it up in serious, non-joking contexts.
Not everyone forgets that, its just that Trump is exactly what lefties and dems want republicans and conservatives to be. There hasn't been a GOP candidate since I've been voting that hasn't been called a racists or a crypto-fascist. Biden said Romney was going to put black people back in chains. Romney, about as milk toast and inoffensive of republican as can be. Lets not forget the outrage storm over his strapping a dog to his station wagon in the 80s back when I was riding around in the back of my parents truck in much less safe conditions.
Partisan politics is just silly and tribal, unfortunately its how we choose our leaders in about the most atavistic way possible.
Is politics and economic ideas are generally incoherent. He's a populist authoritarian with clearly anti-liberal economics(generally associated with liberals in the US) and he has expressed generally skeptical opinions of US military intervention overseas but like almost everything else, hasn't actually accomplished anything in that regard. He doesn't actually seem to care about social issues and to the extent he does, he's not a homophobe, was in favor of letting transgender folks use whatever bathroom they choose and pro-choice. But he doesn't care enough about any of that enough not to pander to the religious right.
He also signed the most liberal criminal just bill in the last 30 years.
