The Truth about RFK Jr

Today The New York Times reported, "As a measles outbreak expands in West Texas, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health and human services secretary, on Tuesday cheered several unconventional treatments, including cod liver oil, but again did not urge Americans to get vaccinated. In a prerecorded interview that aired on Fox News, Mr. Kennedy said that the federal government was shipping doses of vitamin A to Gaines County, the epicenter of the outbreak, and helping to arrange ambulance rides. H.H.S. officials previously said they were shipping doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine to Texas, but Mr. Kennedy did not discuss vaccination. Texas doctors had seen “very, very good results,” Mr. Kennedy claimed, by treating measles cases with a steroid, budesonide; an antibiotic called clarithromycin; and cod liver oil, which he said had high levels of vitamin A and vitamin D."

Recommending cod liver oil has no basis in experiments, to the best of my knowledge. I have a recollection of reading that antibiotics may help in secondary infections, but (and I am not a physician) budesonide sounds like exactly the wrong thing to use. Link: "Glucocorticoids, including budesonide, are immunosuppressant drugs. Patients who are immunocompromised are at a higher risk of developing infections than healthy individuals. Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungus, can overgrow in the genitalia of females with immunosuppression leading to vulvovaginal candidiasis; this is not a sexually transmitted disease. Infections like chickenpox and measles can run to a more serious and even fatal course in persons with suppressed immunity. If patients suffer exposure to chickenpox or measles infection, preventative treatment is indicated as appropriate, and if chickenpox occurs, treatment with antiviral medications may merit consideration."

You shouldn’t need treatments of any kind for a disease that was eradicated by vaccines. This psycho wants people to get sick and die.

Measles was done in the U.S. in 2000 due to the vaccine, then idiots like RFK Jr and other science deniers/sleptics stepped in. Subsequent measles deaths lie at the feet of these morons.

Any more sickness and deaths due to failure to set an immediate MMR vaccination program in motion at his direction should be publicly called not "measles victims" but "RFK Jr. victims". So that throughout the media, the blame gets associated with his name.

And I agree with another poster here: He will probably be the first thrown out of the flaming, crashing GOP plane without a parachute.

I dunno. RFK was named in that big speech that Trump just did as someone who is going to look into why autism rates have increased.

Which is insane.

Sounds more like Trump's going to be buying into more and more of the anti-vaxx BS.

(FWIW, I think Rubio has a shorter life expectancy; he looked a bit green around the gills when told it was his job to reclaim the Panama Canal and when Trump said, "We'll know who to blame if anything goes wrong.")

Rubio's loss will be irrelevant to history. A footnote if he is lucky. But RFK Jr. is screwing with the lives of the USA's children. Now, while I am rapidly losing any respect for the USA as a country, I do not under any circumstances want to see children harmed due to deliberate neglect caused by rampant insanity.

Which is why RFK Jr. needs to be named and shamed at every single opportunity.

I agree with that. I just think the problem is Trump is more or less immune to shame.

You would think there would be a massive backlash against children dying through the stupidity of their parents, but look at things like Sandy Hook. That SHOULD have been a reason for sensible gun control but America shrugged, allowed some doubt about it even being a thing that happened, and moved on.

America is in thrall now to a dangerous cult.

Vitamin A should be given to children with measles. It is WHO recommendation (although the US is no longer a member of WHO?) It reduces severity of disease. I append US specific guidance. It is not an alternative to vaccination in prevention. There is no evidence vitamin A prevents infection.

I linked to this new article yesterday:
Has RFK Jr. betrayed the antivax movement? (Respectful Insolence, Mar 4, 2025)
It’s a common antivax claim that measles is not only harmless, but that it can be treated withvitamin A. Remember that claim? It showed up a lot among antivaxxers during the Samoan measles outbreak in 2019. Here’s the thing, though. While there is evidence that administering vitamin A to children with severe measles can decrease the risk of hospitalization and death and it is indeed used in developing countries for that very purpose because children there often have vitamin deficiencies, there is little or no evidence that vitamin A makes a difference in children with normal pre-existing vitamin A levels:

Vitamin A is less commonly used for measles cases in the U.S., according to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Doctors say one reason may be that most Americans have enough vitamin A in their diet.
“I think the big caveat of all of this is that there’s a significantly higher rate of vitamin A deficiency in developing countries,” said Dr. Alexandra Yonts, infectious disease specialist at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. “So it is less clear whether there is any benefit in populations like in the U.S. and other developed countries.”

NHS.UK wrote, "Budesonide can sometimes affect your immune system so you're more likely to catch infections such as flu, COVID-19, the common cold and chest infections. Tell your doctor if you get symptoms of an infection. Keep away from people with an infectious illness, especially chickenpox, shingles or measles. If you've never had these illnesses before they could make you very ill."

A NYT story to which I linked yesterday indicated that RFK Jr mentioned budenoside, which is a corticosteroid, as one of several possible treatments. My expertise lies in biochemistry, not medicine, but this sounds flat-out wrong.

Certainly seems non-evidence based. There are reports of steroid use in cases of brain inflammation with measles, but you would use dexamethasone not budesonide. Certainly unlike vitamin A it is not standard practice to give when treating measles. (Nor would the routine use of clarithromycin, also mentioned).

Recommending treatment for a disease instead of the vaccine that prevents it is like recommending wheelchairs instead of wearing a seatbelt. RFK Jr wants more sick and dead children.

I found one study that indicated no difference between taking vs. not taking cortisone.

Put it this way: RFK Jr. Drove for hours with a decapitated and rotting whale head on the roof of his car, while its rank putrescences ran down over his own children inside. If he has that much utter disregard for his own children's health and safety, how much concern do you think he has for anyone else's children. Sweet FA.

He is a lunatic, a dangerous and deadly lunatic. He should be nowhere near any public health responsibility.

Is that a picture of one such in your avatar?

It was painful to see President Trump give a shout-out to Secretary Kennedy regarding a putative rise in autism. Many people are aware that Andrew Wakefield’s study claiming to link autism with the MMR vaccine was fraudulent. Earlier in this thread I mentioned a study that was suggestive of such a connection; this paper was eviscerated for its lack of quality, by Stephen Austin, among the world’s foremost experts in identifying and quantitating nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Secretary Kennedy did not disavow a link between the two in his confirmation hearings; moreover, his highly questionable pronouncements on the recent outbreak of measles indicates that he is utterly unqualified to judge any medical matter.

Utterly unqualified period.
