The Truth about RFK Jr

Oh Jesus. They are going to let him be in charge, aren't they?

What the ◊◊◊◊!?
Yep. Donnie Diapers is going to ◊◊◊◊ us again. Well, he and the credulous/cynical maga weirdos who elected him. It will take more than a generation to repair the damage to just the U.S. scientific community. The environment is just ◊◊◊◊◊◊.

I just heard from a good friend who works in public health (i.e., an epidemiologist). He just said his team reported that all their access to several NIH databases has simply disappeared. This is priceless data that has been accumulated over literally decades. They don't know if the data still exists, is being scrubbed, or what.

Horrific vandalism of the pains-taking work of genuinely smart people by posturing cretins.

The CDC website is also essentially down. Completely non-functional.

Some scientists were busy downloading it recently to keep what was one there.

We already know files and studies on the CDC and HHS websites are being scrubbed so this comes as no suprise. Trump, maga weirdos, Leon and their ilk are determined to eliminate anything which contradicts their racist, sexist, homo/tranphobic, anti-scientific worldview. They call themselves pro-life but they would kill children (and others) in defiance of a vaccine/mask mandate. We see that sort of willful ignorance in this very thread.

Won't take too much more effort from Donnie Diapers, his worthless nominees and administration, and of course his idiot maga weirdos, and they'll turn this nation into a superstituous, third world mess.

Please, trumpsplaining maga weirdos, explain the rationale behind this nonsense? On the other hand, don't. It will just be parroting whatever oderous excrement you've read on fact-free trumpist web-sites.

It could be contaminated with DEI. Best to burn it all.

I'm becoming convinced that the Trump administration is inflicting incalculable, irreversible damage upon the United States scientific infrastructure.
I'm sure they are. They are also destroying trust.

I imagine that researchers abroad who have dreamt of going to the US to work in medical research must be looking at the US and re-thinking. Probably better to go to Europe, Canada or the UK right now.

Serious question: How willing are the chief scientists and technicians in these fields to migrate to another first-world country willing to provide the infrastructure and support for them to continue their work?

I ask because we have a serious shortage of qualified scientists here in Australia, the result of some poor decisions by our previous conservative governments re education. But the current government might look kindly on "specialist visas" for many of them. They won't even have to learn another language! We speak English as well as Strine.

I can't speak for everyone, but I've lived and worked overseas for periods of years before.

I can't see any way out from under this. A generation of science, history, sociology, and medical advancement will be withheld due to the bigotry and the intentional ignorance of a narcisisstic multi-felon, his sycophantic billionaire coterie, and his drooling, willfully ignorant cultish maga weirdos. How this will end is anybody's guess because a vastly stupid and vain egomaniac holds the nuclear codes, and there is no telling what perceived slight might initiate a disproportionate response.

The blame for all this rests upon the backs of maga weirdom and their acceptance of untrue things in direct defiance of that which comports with observed reality.

Definitely an option. But the greater question is how willing some of us will be to fight to preserve what we've spent decades building here. Maybe we have a responsibility not to let them burn it all down because of the "woke."
They have already burned it down. Science in the USA was already being defunded before Trump, part of the GOP's anti-woke agenda. And even if they were allowed to continue their programs, the whole field of science in the USA is being denigrated and degraded. The proponents of Project 2025 are totally anti-science - it conflicts with their religious view of the world. American Taliban means exactly what it says.

Go work in Australia, or elsewhere, continuing the work they do now. If things stabilise in the USA and come back to (more) normal(ish), bring it home again.

You do know the US pilfered the best of the Nazi scientists after WW2 and gave them a new home and space to do their jobs - Operation Paperclip. That's what needs to happen to the USA now. Leave...while you can.

ETA. We have these levels of bushfire alerts here. You guys are now at Emergency Warning.

I've encountered several Australians, and I guess that their speech did remind me vaguely of English.

Many scientists have moved TO the US, but most of them (or at least most of the ones that I've encountered) made the move when they were 20-somethings. It's easier to adjust to a major change like moving to a different country when you're young, and especially when you either don't have kids. or your kids are very young.

The US has always been the undisputed leader in science for years. Now, only those who can swindle the most amount of money for the least effort are the technology leaders. "Adjunct professors" work for McDonalds level working conditions.

Plenty of online videos about American opinions on moving to Australia.

Meanwhile! Back to madman RFK Jr.

Absolutely. Look into the issue of the FDA banning Red Dye #3. That article goes into detail but I'll summarise it as briefly as I can:

The Delaney Clause is a 1960s law saying that the FDA must ban any food additives shown to cause cancer in humans or animals. There was a paper showing that Red Dye #3 could cause cancer in rats, at lifetime doses almost 25,000 times the human acceptable daily allowance. Furthermore, it caused cancer by a hormonal mechanism that doesn't even occur in humans.

Chevron Deference is the standard that says that it is the experts and scientists in the regulating body who get to interpret the Delaney Clause, and in this case the FDA said that because the food dye had not been shown to be in any way harmful to humans, it wouldn't fall under the requirements of the Delaney Clause and they did not ban it.

However, the Supreme Court recently ended Chevron Deference, which means the scientists no longer get a say in the interpretation of the Delaney clause. Red Dye #3 was the test case for this. It was banned for absolutely no scientific or medical reason, but because of a petition from "environmental" and "food safety" (ie, chemophobia-promoting) groups.

This is devastating to American science. Science is no longer under the control of scientists, it's under the control of politicians and pressure groups with no scientific expertise or validity.

No worries, the FDA will be gone soon and then companies can put anything in their food they like, as long as they make a profit.
Your health and safety in the hands of the shareholders.

Methanol and lead make alcohol taste better for instance. And who wouldn't want that?
