I had a friend, now deceased, who also belonged to the brahmin caste. A nicer guy you couldn't meet, was raised in the US from age 3. He married a woman who was from a lower caste, but still considered one of the higher castes, than his family and his family never really accepted her, feeling she was below Ajay despite being a highly educated and successful woman. He said his parents would make snide comments about her that had to do with her lower caste status that pained him deeply.
I think it's naive not to think that a lot of people have a sense of entitlement and superiority that stems from their economic/social/cultural background. I remember when Leona Helmsley, the hotel billionaire, was reported for infamously declaring "We don't pay taxes; only the little people pay taxes".
