Parts of Rowland's cold reading book are called "vile and inhumane" by a Café regular:
Folks find it peculiar of me, that I can applaud Ian's contribution while negating those couple of sections that are, in my opinion, vile and inhumane... far less "moral" and "ethical" than any of those underhanded psychic types out there that eeek out a mid-ranged living doing their thing...

Yeah seen that link before jimtron.As Chris pointed out recentley,cold reading was never a magicians effect they have simply taken it as their own.So they cannot complain when it's exposed. A lot of old time magicians that just can't move on over there.
 
I liked the dialogue you kept up Jimtron. It was an enjoyable thread, and you did get him (the reader)to admit those spirits arnt there saying they are grandma and the
they liked the flowers at their funeral! He didnt say the others were frauds, but from what he did say it was a given. But they all stick together in the end against the 'cynics'. And as much of the description of his art...it was very much what cold reading entails wasnt it? Surely SB and the Prof are being uncovered by their own kind?
 
I love my town. I am working on a Mystery Tour of Spokane that will end in a magic show in the style of the old Ghost Shows. There is enough odd history and urban legends here to make for some fun times.

I can't say I didn't enjoy it there growing up (mid-'60's to late '70's); just that it got too small-town for my taste as I got older. Each to their own, I guess. My whole family still lives there, and they love it.

What kinds of things are you including in the tour? Stuff from the fire? Patsy Clark's? Sounds like it'd be fun. You can PM me so as not to derail the thread.
 
The Magic Cafe is not a free and open forum for the expression of opinions and ideas. It is a tightly controlled little communist state where moderators like Tom Cutts are allowed to insult other members and edit and delete posts and threads with which he disagrees. And mentioning any moderator action is strictly forbidden. Welcome to 1984.

They'd be better off eliminating the area called "Stand the Test". It was created to allow members to offer conflicting opinions on debatable issues. But the woo side is free to insult other members and speak their mind. Opposing voices are quickly silenced with the apparent support of the management.

In a recent thread at the Magic Cafe a member stated flatly that the JREF didn't allow dissent. When it was pointed out that the JREF has a forum which contains posts from members who disagree with the JREF and James Randi on many issues the thread suddenly disappeared. Evidence that members who disparage the JREF are wrong doesn't last very long over there.

They should stick to providing a forum for magicians to help other magicians with magic related topics, which is what the forum does best.

I agree, and have expressed several times that if any of us were to the same thing in the gospel section, we'd be severely reprimanded.

Really?! That would be awesome. I could walk up to Callahan, show him an envelope, and demand in front of everyone that he use his psychic powers to tell me the contents on the spot. If he does, I'll give him $1000 right then and there.

I'd love for him to go all nutty and call me an "intellectual bigot" - wah! :D

His only talents are convincing strangers of his insincerity and pissing people off.
 
Ugh. On a scale of 1 to 10, I have to give Jim Callahan's site a 53 on the asshat-o-meter.

How is it that someone with is paranormal powers can't spell "challenge" correctly?

I would like to think the same, but he (Koenig) is starting to push things a little too far. He has started putting a link in the majority of his posts to a file on Uploadipedia which he refers to as the PedoFiles - recordings of several phone calls between Randi and some teenagers that were prank calling him many years ago (http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/swift-blog/525-a-champion-grubbie-speaks-out.html). It appears Dave is stepping up his JREF/Randi smear campaign quite significantly, and is doing everything he can to tarnish their reputations.

As I posted on that Pseudo site,after 40 years I'd think Randi has heard it all before from his "enemies". I don't see anyone agreeing with Koenig. He'll no doubt make another YouTube video. Eventually someone will sue him.
Lets see him go on radio and denounce Randi as a "peadophile" or play the tapes.It wont happen.
So all things considered he's not that smart.
 
The professor must be desperate to be on that forum in the first place. There are heaps of other forums where he could be. I wonder why he chose that one?

Maybe it was one of the few that would not ban within a few days. Or maybe because that forum was mentioned here not long ago.
