The November Stundie Nomination Thread of all Threads

Apparently rock music = white culture, and preferring rap to rock = hating white culture. Also, his generalization of white people now preferring rap to rock sounds incredibly anecdotal to me. But the best part of this is the great irony of where rock music came from in the first place.

I seem to remember something about Delta Blues being modified into Chicago Blues, and then to early rock and roll. And that early great Chuck Berry being acceptable because he "sounded white."

Yeah, but you're just a shill for Big Rock.

ander's latest effort that the Horishima atomic bombing was faked by the Japanese and Americans working together has to be one of the best yet.

AL is a troll, and that should disqualify him from the Stundies. You don't get Stundies (well, not my vote, anyway) for just making up idiot stuff to get the grown-ups to pay attention to you.

Surely, Anders is just kidding. He puts no real effort into his silly theories. He just likes silliness.

From an article about Rand Paul and the plagiarism issue:

Mr. Paul took personal responsibility for the oversights, which he and aides said were caused by staff providing him background materials that were not properly footnoted. But the Kentucky Republican, a possible 2016 White House candidate, also said he was being held by the news media to a higher standard than other politicians.

He takes personal responsibility, but it wasn't his fault, and stop picking on him.

Is there a transcript of what he said? A direct quote would be best for a Stundie.

Well, to be fair to Rand Paul, it's the journalist making the statement. I suppose journalists are automatically disqualified from stundies.

Claiming there isn't any evidence of something existing requires proof the thing doesn't exist...

All one needs to prove an existential question is a single, solitary confirmation of existence. None have been provided for Jesus. As you can't prove a. Negative, may or may not have existed. Same for any other mythological being, Bigfoot, etc...

But The Mythical Jesus is a positive claim. It claims that the first followers of Jesus worshipped an incorporeal being they called "Jesus". Now all we need to find is evidence of anyone ever anywhere worshipping such a Jesus. So far no evidence of any such group has been found.

No one is being asked to prove a negative.

But wait, there's more!

Reversed burden of proof? Yeah, that's usually a clear sign of non-logical thought processes.

The "claim" of fact being made is Jesus (or Bigfoot) existed. The burden of proof is on the people making the claim to provide evidence supporting their claim. There is no evidence Jesus (or Bigfoot existed). Thus the inability for disbelievers to prove a negative.

There is evidence. It's circumstantial, fragmentary, biased, hearsay evidence, but it is evidence.

The people trying to argue against it have even less.

For my money, the claim that "You can't prove a negative [and so negative claims ought to be presumed true]" is the real stundie there.

I've studied a wee bit of logic and reasoning, and I promise you that (1) of course, you can prove certain negative statements (and that the term "negative statement" is not well-defined here in any case) and (2) the fact that one can't prove something doesn't mean we should assume that it's true.

A proponent of the Jesus myth ought to argue thus: We have no evidence that such a man existed, and if such a man existed, we would almost certainly have such evidence. Hence it is unlikely that Jesus existed.

(Note: I'm not saying that those premises are true. I'm merely illustrating one form that an argument for the non-existence of JC might reasonably take. But "You can't prove a negative, so I must be right," is just nonsense.)

Don't forget BeBop; it became the dominant style of Jazz in the 50s, helping a rather obscure Rhythm and Blues style, called Rock and Roll, become first a dance craze and then the dominant music style worldwide. Because both '50s pop ballads and BeBop are useless as dance music, everywhere teens danced had to play Rock. If Jazz had stayed dance music, Rock would not have been a necessity. Club owners never would have let the early rockers in the door if they had had a choice.

Wow. My first Stundie nom. Shame you don't actually understand what I'm saying though.

The Jesus Myth Theory is a positive claim for a cult who worshipped an incorporeal Jesus. There is no evidence of such a cult.

The problem is they are demanding evidence which no one would expect for a person like Jesus was supposed to have been, from a region which was totally obliterated by the Romans several times. Not gonna happen.

They are also ignoring the expert opinion of Historians who study the subject.

I have no opinion on that and don't want to enter into the actual argument regarding the Jesus myth.

It's just that the claim "You can't prove a negative," is repeated far too often on this skeptic site and it happens to be a pet peeve of mine. So, my comments are directed only to that particular logical misunderstanding.

There's a SF novel based on that concept - the "matrixed" people are even allowed to think they've escaped the illusion, but that's just part of another illusion. I can't remember the name of the book, though.

This one goes way, way, back, before the internet even,

World on a Wire (Fassbinder, 1973), based on Simulacron 3 (1964) by Daniel Gayloue. This is the film that defined the VR Genre...

Now back to the stundies

OK. No worries. I just thought I had to defend my post from Stundiedom, not everyone is up to speed on these things.

Derail over.
