The latest right-wing "scandal" - Umbrellagate!

We were talking about Marines. You used pictures of Soldiers as your example. Are you confused about who I was talking about? Should I have specified only Marines? Would that make you happy?

As to the rest of it, part of what made it demeaning is their position while holding the umbrella. Notice the difference between what the Marines were doing versus what the soldiers were doing for other presidents. The soldiers were behind the president, not front and center. Can you not see the difference?

Good lord man, do you even take yourself seriously at this point?

How is it spinning when you've asked me the same question?

Seriously, do YOU read?

I've already posted another picture that doesn't look the same and pointed out that this shot is a weird shot.

How many times do I have to say "It's just a weird shot and looks ridiculous' before it will sink in?

Your statement that it is just a weird shot and looks ridiculous is not justified in any way shape or form. There is no difference at all when it's compared, honestly, to the images in the 4 presidents 4 umbrellas 1 outrage collage photo.

That you think your statement is all that it is needed to support the criticism is laughable.

I think we need a term akin to the Dunning-Kruger Effect for people who have such a severe case of Obama Derangement Syndrome that they can't even comprehend that they have it.

If you can't see the difference between a Marine standing stiffly on guard with his hand sharply at his waist while his other hand juts out at an angle and holds an umbrella as being vastly different from a guy standing meekly behind the president holding an umbrella with his arm obscured behind his back, then you are either lying or blind.

Either way I'm done laughing at people pretending they can't see the freakin' obvious when it's right in front of their face. LOOK at the other pictures and compare it to this one.

You really are arguing this is the first time in Obama's presidency that someone has held an umbrella for him? Seriously?

Oh and once again since you didn't bother to frickin' READ what I actually wrote. I have no problem with this picture at all. I voted for Obama twice. However I can still understand why people are reacting to this picture even though I completely disagree with them.

Why in the world do y'all freakin' bother to reply to posts if you aren't reading them anyway.

It is a bit silly.

What's the charge? That having somebody hold an umbrella for you is wimpy?

What does it matter if the president is effete, effeminate, and kind of wimpy? Do these traits affect his ability to govern? Probably not at all.

So what if Obama throws a baseball like a weak, poorly-coordinated child? He wasn't elected to strike people out, he was elected to make tough decisions. Wearing mom-jeans around town, while a bit off-putting, shouldn't have any effect on his ability to make those decisions.

Why do we need our presidents to be "manly". It seems a bit primitive to want tough, macho guys in charge when brawn isn't necessary for the task at hand. Athletic ability is also overrated - what does that matter? Sports are just a distraction. Obama has big fish to fry; his inability to hit the broad side of a barn in his favorite sport has no bearing on crucial matters of state and national security.

Bravo to Obama for breaking the cycle and showing the American people that nary a whiff of masculinity is required to perform presidential duties.

You like to make out he is unmanly. Tell you what, YOU order Marines to stand in the rain and hold umbrellas over you and your friend so you stay dry and see if they jump to obey your manliness and authority.
Also I am constantly amused by people that think liking or playing sports, and particularly doing it well, is something inherently 'manly'. Hawking is not a man? Einstein? Feynman? I think you have the terms 'man' and 'jock' confused.

Could you explain the significance of standing next to the president to hold an umbrella versus standing behind the president to hold an umbrella over him?

Since all the previous "scandals" haven't worked out so well for the right, they've now fixated on the news that two Marines held umbrellas over Prime Minister Erdogan and President Obama during a press conference outside the White House.

This is, apparently, an outrage or something.

Non-issue, although it does look kind of silly.

Teddy Roosevelt (a Republican and a REAL MAN'S president!) would have stood there bareheaded and got SOAKING WET! Right down to his skivvies! And never changed them until next week, as per according to Regulations!

What happened to the America I knew?

The rain wouldn't have dared get him wet unless he wanted it to do so.

He needs to hire these guys.

The former allows the faux outrage that was surprisingly lacking when previous presidents experienced the latter.

{citation needed}

Tell ya what. You dig up one article with some conservative poutrage of other presidents having umbrellas held for them by servicemembers and we'll talk.

The only reason that this photo got any press whatsoever is because Obama is black and a Democrat.

The whole thing is theatre of the absurd.

Remember when there was white presidents, especially white Republican presidents, and no one ever criticized them for anything other than the most serious and demonstrably real issues?

This isn't exactly a new subject. The Army and Marines have had a long standing tradition that it doesn't rain in the Army/Marines, it rains on the Army/Marines.
Gen. Officers have aides that carry the umbrella for them (if they want one) so I don't see a problem with the CIC doing the same.

Frankly, I view this incident as hardly worth bothering with, save for one thing:
The Marine isn't an aide, he's a guard, and he's in a Dress Blue Uniform. That makes holding an umbrella, or anything else (save a weapon), inappropriate.
The Marine no doubt complied because he was asked to, and that's what Marines are supposed to do. But he should not be asked to perform menial tasks when his purpose, even if only ceremonially, is to guard the President.
It's not unmanly for Pres.Obama to request an umbrella, but it is disrespectful to the young Marine, and the uniform he is wearing, for him to allow the Marine to perform a chore that is more appropriately the duty of a servant.

Yeah! Like birth certificates and whatnot.

Exactly, no one would ever engage in ridiculous conspiracy theorizing about white presidents like that they were involved in the 9/11 attacks or had Vince Foster murdered. Now if Bush were black, people certainly would have accused him of being involved in the 9/11 attacks, and if Clinton were black people would have accused him of murdering Vince Foster. But that never happened because they are both white.

Many presidents have been accused of conspiracy theories.

Do you have examples of any white president and birth certificate nonsense or unbrella silliness?

It is possible, and probable, that Obama's race played a role in the birther nonsense. But you are giving fools way too much credit if you assume that it is all racism. If someone told you they believe the Earth is 6,000 years old, the Illuminati runs the world, global warming is a hoax and Obama was born in Kenya do you really think they must be racist to get suckered by the last one?

The only way to get a real good idea how much racism played a role would be able to run a simultaneous experiment where Obama is white and has a white father from Kenya. Obviously we can't do that so we are stuck with speculation, but it is not necessary to make an additional assumption of racism when idiocy is sufficient. People have been spewing nonsense about American presidents for as long as there have been American presidents. Until Obama, all have been white males, I assume you do not assume that all nonsense that other presidents have been accused of and Obama hasn't is because they were white. Perhaps I am wrong and you do, but that would be quite silly in my view.
