Thanks for proving my point. In all those pictures you have a person behind or towards the back of the person holding an umbrella over their shoulder.
You don't have at "at guard" position of a marine standing stiffly in position with his hand at his waist and the other arm jutted out stiffly holding the umbrella to the side of the president.
It's a weird SHOT which is why THAT shot and not the others is the one making the round. It's just a weird photo.

Honestly I think a lot of the stiff positions and manouvers in the military look strange and un natural to me, thus this looks little more strange to me. I don't know the regulations for this kind of thing, but were they allowed to move? I just don't see how their position is Obamas fault either.
As for people wondering why female marines are allowed umbrellas, I spoke with a friend of someone in that marine corps, they mentioned that female marines are allowed umbrellas due to all the gel they have to put in their hair if its long. The rain would wash the gel out.

I have difficulty understanding why being personally selected to assist the democratically elected head of State of your nation in publicly welcoming and honouring the leader of another nation is demeaning just because you're holding an umbrella.
Those marines may be an honour guard, but they are also alert and prepared to protect their charges should a threat present. If you were providing security wouldn't you prefer to be the closest person to your charge and holding the umbrella rather than having two additional people on the podium between you and the people you're protecting, not to mention potentially obstructing your view of part of the crowd?

I agree, I suppose it's because we're used to seeing those types of moves when they are doing something as a group. It's almost like Obama has one of those Buckingham palace guards standing next to him holding the umbrella.
It certainly isn't Obama's fault, it's just a funny looking picture. I posted way in the beginning that the picture just looks funny and was probably just making the rounds and then someone who is anti Obama mentioned the "regulations" crap and it spun out in that way.
But those not "anti Obama" can see why it got so much attention.
