The General Native American Discussion Thread

You ever saw a native library? Not much in there.

There are poor areas of the country populated by white Americans and black Americans that don't have very nice libraries. Are you not concerned about them? Seems rather racist not to be.

You've never been to a reservation out west I presume.

You presume incorrectly.

No I didn't.

You claimed that American Indians don't have political representation. Are you now retracting your claim?

So ... they don't deserve government money or assistance for basic things like sewage facilities and running water because .... they aren't proper americans? Or what?

Most of these areas are rural enough to not have sewer systems. In that area you use septic tanks.

The thing is that all over rural america there are dying towns with little prospects. Why are the tough economic realities that cost farms that date bake many generations ok but this so different?

These areas are much worse than those areas. And while I am genuinely concerned for those areas, I'm talking about conditions that mimic the third world.

Nope

Didn't say that is was "white" to have plumbing. I said they deserve water and sewage. Check your self bro.

And I said that improving neighborhoods attracts commercial interest.

And for the record, there are Wal-Marts in Japan, yet they still have street vendors. I wonder where the word "balance" comes into play here.

Wow - hey, looks like it can be done. So what's the problem again?

Native Americans should be able to go to Congress, give them a list of what they need or want (within reason) and get it no questions asked.

Yes, all those rights. The same rights every other American has.

they are 'first nations' in canada.
obviously america does not recognize them as such.
there were 500 nations on american soil beore they were destroyed by the 'land of the free'.
canada also has a poor history with first nations, but we are getting better.
however, there are a disturbing number of third world conditions in aboriginal communities here too.
surely you are not that insensitive to their problems in your own country.

Indians even have their own sports teams - the Washington Redskins, for example. Where are the Washington Whities? Talk about unfair...

Talk about racist :D.

Mascot

Many individuals who admire the heroism and romanticism evoked by the classic Native American warrior image, but numerous[quantify] Native Americans which think use of items associated with them as mascots is both offensive and demeaning.

In August 2005, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) banned the use of "hostile and abusive" Native American mascots in postseason tournaments.[136] An exception was made to allow the use of tribal names as long as approved by that tribe (such as the Seminole Tribe of Florida's approving use of their name for the team of Florida State University.)[137][138] The use of Native American-themed team names in U.S. professional sports is widespread. Examples are mascot Chief Wahoo and teams such as the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins, considered controversial by some.

Could you imagine people mocking African Americans in black face at a game?" he said. "Yet go to a game where there is a team with an Indian name and you will see fans with war paint on their faces. Is this not the equivalent to black face?

So far I've heard no good reasons for Native Americans not having direct "national" representation in congress other than "it's too hard", "it won't happen" or basic denial.
