I have had a number of successes. I will recount my biggest three.
There was young man, 19 years of age, caught with coke. First charges, he was scared, had lost contact with his family, (a good 'christian' family of hardworking blue collar folks) I acted as his agent and secured the first ever diversion against cocaine possession charges. Diversion has been used for pot possession but never for harder stuff. It involved getting him back in contact with his folks, and the tearful reunion and change of heart was quite astounding. There was a series of letters written, he acknowledge and did some community service and moved back home with his folks, I helped him find employment doing construction, and the crown dropped all charges and all evidence of charges no longer exist. Thus he can travel to the states as opposed to what happens when you have a discharge. I consider this a big win for the positive effect achieved through this action. Standing in court, letting them all know that there was no way they were getting a piece of him without going through me first and seeing the look in the judges face, and the prosecutors arrogance turned to respect after a few phone calls, caused me to really think I had done good.
There was a hunter, who was out hunting for sustenance. He came across a Conservation Officer who asked for license and stuff. Not having any the CO took the mans firearm. He was ok with it and told him that he had 12 more at home and would just go get one and come back out. CO said he would keep taking the mans firearms. Man said that will work until you get to the last firearm, then you will be getting the bullets. CO did not like this and reported him to the RCMp and SWAT team descended upon his house. He had plants growing and ended up facing 12 charges. Everything from threatening a peace officer, possession, cultivation, trafficking, careless storage of firearm, unregistered firearms, etc. It was at this point I met him.
He was a smart cookie and picked up on the logic and reasoning quickly. He served them with a NUI and COR and Fee Schedule, and they called him back within 3 days to talk. They had an agreement for him to sign, which he did. In it they agreed to drop all charges, return all property, and he agreed to not speak to any CO's if he saw them in the bush whilst he was hunting. He is now a Freeman-on-the-Land and hunts regularly without permit or license and his small personal grow op is unmolested last I heard.
The other big win I point to is the discharge of $67.5 Million worth of Student loans which the government of BC discharged by set-off after I had started an action and started teaching people about the student loan set-off option. Many of the people going through the process had their loans completely discharged, and although the government did not point to our actions, the people bringing the action all found satisfaction, and those who did not make the initial government cut, now have the opportunity to point to the governments forgiveness and since there is simply no legislative function allowing for the people in the government to arbitrarily decide that a single mom can have her loans set-off but a single bloke cannot they cannot be denied remedy as well. Equality and all that.
So those are three of my most memorable.
