The lede of the Gobi Solar Farm story is that there was no underlying grazing utility to preserve. It was the installation of the solar farm itself that transformed the local ecosystem to something suitable for sheep-farming.
Yes indeed. Which is why I find the selective outrage for some things (hydro reservoirs) and selective celebration for other things (solar farms) so weird.
In general, I'm of the opinion that "wildnerness" is a kind of hoax, and that terraforming all the things is perfectly acceptable. My only quibble is that if we're going to do terraforming well, then we probably shouldn't do too much of it.
Also, it's funny how objections to "artificial" and "man-made" go out the window when it's the Right Kind of Terraforming.
