The Biblical Realities of Hell

Not really. It still describes YHWH as a megalomaniac who demands perpetual praise and condemns to destruction those who fail to deliver it.

By the way, are you going to offer proof that any of those gods that you don't believe in don't exist?

It is possible that they did exsit just as a unicorn does.
What Enoch discribed as the fallen and some were so involved with this creation they could be the ones that were chained in darkness buired under the Earths mountains.
I can't say either way.

Fixed it for you.
Try taking it from here make an attempt.

Add back the part you crossed out, and realise that all the responsibility is ours. No-one else to blame, nothing to look forward to after this life is done. This is it, make the most of what we have here and now.

That's not a unicorn, that's a deer with a genetic mutation. Are you now going to look for a short Irishman in a green jacket and claim that it is proof that leprechauns exist?

Edge, you attempted to counter atheism by claiming that we can't prove your god does not exist. But the same is true for any god that you do not believe in, be it Zeus, Wotan, Ganesha or Huitzilopitchli. You can't prove that any of them do not exist, yet, (I assume) you still do not believe in them. Simply pointing out that you can't prove something doesn't exist does not make a sound argument for belief that it does exist.

True my faith isn't dependent on them and if they existed, they may have said they are God but from what I have as an understanding is, they may be the fallen that had some powers that were present at one time and were allowed to be here but crossed some line with God and were banished.

There is no reason to worry about them.
I got to go now see ya in the morning.

I'm reminded of the line from Toy Story when Andy says "I brought my dinosaur who eats force-field dogs".

That makes no sense.

That may be true but there are many instances where the doctors even say we just don't know it's a miracle.
If somebody beats incredible odds to live, yes, medical professionals will often say "it's a miracle" which is an expression to signify that nobody thought this would happen, but they're not saying, "A supernatural being must have intervened." People occasionally survive plunges from the 15th floor, because they were lucky enough to hit something along the way and land just right. I think many people would say "It's a miracle!" because you certainly wouldn't expect it, but that doesn't mean that some supernatural being suspended the laws of physics and bestowed a special blessing on the drunken idiot falling out a 15th story window.

Beating the odds =/= god working a miracle in your life. Every single week, somebody beats the odds in the lottery, and they weren't all hand-picked by Yahweh.

And below My bolding; where you say; Naturally god gets none of the blame when baby in the next room dies from the lack of this special favor.

Skeptical atheists will blame God for this.
Wrong wrong wrong. Atheists will just point out to believers that they can't claim that their god is working some special miracle in one case, while they completely ignore a baby dying. If god was there to save the drunken idiot falling out the window, why did he completely ignore the five children who died in a housefire down the street? You can't have it both ways. Atheists recognize that random things happen to people, and some are good and some are bad. Theists will credit their god with blessing somebody who got lucky, while hand-waving away 27,000 innocent children who die every day. (And still others will try to find messages in tsunamis and earthquakes that kill several thousand.)

You consider it to be Butt kissing?
What worshipping and thanking God, praising God or Jesus.
I thank people everyday and praise they're work or art or the job they are doing am I kissing their butt?
Not if the thanks is in line with what they did. If somebody holds the door open for me, I'll say thank you and smile. I won't follow that person around and try to return the favor, and then take out an ad in the paper proclaiming that person the nicest person on the planet.

What exactly are you praising god or Jesus for, anyway? What exactly have they done for you? Even if I thought they were real, I wouldn't thank somebody who had his own son killed just so that he wouldn't have to kill everybody else that he cursed with the concept of sin. You do realize that Jesus is your savior against God's judgment, and that Jesus and God are supposed to be one-and-the-same, don't you? You have to accept the sacrifice of Dr Jeckyll to avoid the torture at the hands of Mr. Hyde. It's crazy town.

I kiss my woman’s butt every now and then and a couple of her other attributes?
This is your partner in fornication, yes? Didn't you know that if god wanted you to have sex without being married, he would have supplied you with all your own parts? :boggled:

Because it is a difficult stance to take, I never liked the easy road.
Thanking some one for a sandwich or a gallon of gas when I run out on the road.
Or how about taking a bullet for you?
Because this is what Jesus did for us.
He still does this today so I thank him.
Did you ask Jesus to take a bullet for you? Did you ask him to take a bullet for Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer? Do you realize that Yahweh is the one pointing the gun at you?

What you consider to be butt kissing, giving thanks, just doesn't make sense all you have to do after acknowledging that God exists is to be as good a person as you can… seems like the greatest insurance a person could have and it's pretty much free.
Yet every Christian has a completely different idea of being as good a person as you can. Do you know how many Christians would denounce your open fornication? Also, Pascal's Wager is never a good argument. And it's not free. You have to believe that you are a filthy sinner, deserving of eternal torment, and that's a horrible horrible price to pay. I can't believe that people teach this to your children, "Well, kids, you're all really really bad, all the time, you can't help it, but God loves you so much, and Jesus loves you, and he died so that God could ignore the fact that you're a horrible horrible person, and you'll get to go to Heaven anyway. Not because you deserve it, but because somebody else died for you."
It is possible that they did exsit just as a unicorn does.
That's not a unicorn, edge. He's not a product of unicorn love. He's a deer with one horn, and he can mate with other deer. He doesn't have any special powers, just a mutation. Just like my friend's one-armed daughter is still a human being.

By the way Sling Blade excellent art and in response to your post above, I am not bitter, just talking and taking a side that no one that comes in here really wants to do.

Thanks for bringing that up. Can you show a sandwich or a gallon of gas that actually came from God?

Or how about taking a bullet for you?

If that's the metaphor that you want to use then you need to present the entire metaphor. God says to my neighbor, "do you love me?" The neighbor says, "yes, I do." God then shoots a bullet at the neighbor and then jumps in the path of the bullet. God then turns to me and asks if I love Him and hints that if I don't give the correct answer then there will be no one to stop the bullet that He is going to fire at me.

Yes, God stops bullets, but He is the one firing the bullets. Why thank Him, worship Him or even respect Him?

Art? Did you perhaps click the link in my sig, and you've looked at my beadwork and sculpture? If that's what you mean, thank you. :) That's kind of you. If that's not what you meant, please explain?

I don't actually think you are bitter, Edge. But you hit me with a fallacy, so I hit back with the very same one, trying to show you through example that it's fallacious. I'm not actually angry, as you falsely accused me. I can get angry, trust me, but so can we all.

And I'm certainly not angry at god. Not anymore. Do you know when I was angry at him? I was furious with god when I still believed he was real. Once I realized my god and all the gods were invented by people, the anger at it vanished immediately.

Anger at real people, now...that's another matter entirely.

Because it is a difficult stance to take, I never liked the easy road.

What's difficult about your stance? I've been in it. It's not difficult at all.
You simply claim that god exists, and that's where you can leave it. What's difficult about it?

Thanking some one for a sandwich or a gallon of gas when I run out on the road.

This is a lie, and a cruel one.

Not one time did Jesus ever stop my ex-husband's hand as it swung towards my face, my head, or my body. Not once. And believe me, I was begging him to stop it as hard as I could beg.

But Jesus always let that man hit me. As much as he liked. Jesus even let him force me to my knees and beat me in the head with a bible while screaming at me to "submit! submit!" Jesus never once stopped that, either.

I've gone hungry. Praying for food did not feed me.
I've gone most of my life without medical or dental care. Praying for healing has never healed me.
I've been scared, and hurt, and sad, and lonely. Prayer never amended any of those states. Prayer is simply wishing. Wishing doesn't work. Ask any child.

I would love to have an eternity of bliss rather than death.

I would too, but death is what we get. It's not so bad, though. We won't know it, won't be aware of it, any more than we were aware of it before we were born.

What you consider to be butt kissing, giving thanks, just doesn't make sense all you have to do after acknowledging that God exists is to be as good a person as you can… seems like the greatest insurance a person could have and it's pretty much free.

I've always been the best person I can be. I don't need to imagine some punisher god to insure my morality. I'm still a fine person. I don't commit crimes, I'm good to children and puppies, and I forgive my enemies. No god required. Those are the right things to do, the right way to live, and I manage them just fine without any god involved at all.

The fear of God seems to be a Jewish thing because Jesus, who they didn’t accept or their existing religion didn’t accept, describes God as totally the opposite.

Nope, it's not a "Jewish thing." I was brought up as an Charismatic Evangelical Fundamentalist Christian. Fear of god was very high up on the list. The biggest reason to believe and worship was the threat of eternal hellfire, pain, torment, and torture if you didn't.

At any rate, what about the part where if god reveals himself as a real entity, it would remove our free will to reject him? I've shown the opposite is actually the case. That believing in and obeying an entity you can't confirm is robotic, and not an expression of your actual will. Especially since you have to be threatened into obedience. That's the whole point of hell: to scare you into behaving.

So.

A messenger shows up at your house with a book of instructions, stories, lessons, and commands to be obeyed, and tells you that you have to read this book and obey what's written there. The author of the book will never reveal himself to you or to anyone else. You can never confirm his existence, or his authority, but must simply accept both are true. If you do all this, you will earn a great reward from the author, sometime in the future. If you do not do all this, the author will punish you brutally, without mercy, also at sometime in the future. You are not allowed to meet the author, nor will he ever call you or write to you, beyond the contents of that book. You have no way of knowing this person even exists. You cannot question him, cannot challenge him, cannot even clarify your instructions with him.

Now. Exercise your free will. Do you obey, blindly, from that moment on? Or do you say, "When you can prove any of this is even real, we might talk. Until then, no, thanks," and shut your door?

Which one makes you the robot?

Or they could be the imaginary constructs of people attempting to understand nature by attributing to it human qualities and motivations.

There is no reason to worry about them.
Unless you are worshiping the wrong god.

There are some advantages in being an outnumbered theist here. You can ignore any difficult questions and chose from the multitude of responses something more comfortable to respond to. For example, instead of taking the high road and admitting you were mistaken about proving a negative, you can ignore it and move on to something else.

I will give you credit for sticking around, though, it looks like JudeBrando couldn't take the heat.

i am a theist too, but i do not presume to have many answers.
i certainly do not adhere to the seeming familiarity with 'god(s)' that so many religious people seem to have.
i find it ever humourous how people can seem to believe that they know the wishes, feelings, and character of that being that they credit with all of creation.
at the very least, it is rudely presumptious.

I think you have a disability of some sort.
Or you are being this way on purpose.

No, edge, this is what many people have tried to tell you. If a proportion as high as 25% of your posts are comprehensible, I would be surprised.

You do not write clearly or coherently.

I have no problem with what you said, and you of course didn't need my permission. That being said, I see nothing that is brought to the table when any "god" is used, because it can be anything one wants it to be and therefore it doesn't answer any questions and only adds one more layer to the question.

i agree...everytime i feel i have something of an 'answer', more questions arise.
medieval mystics were the closest to figuring it all out, as they simply saw 'god(s)' as unknowable'.

Yes, I wouldn't want to paint you with the same brush as, say, the fundie who believes that god is directing every little aspect of their lives, a god who is concerned with helping his son win a little league game, or giving him a promotion at the expense of others who don't worship as correctly.

Since the thread concerns hell, could I ask you, do you believe in it? Do you believe we (atheists) will suffer eternal torture for the crime of (forgive me) failing to kiss ass?
