Tam 7?

Replying to all (and especially sundry)

Okay. First, I have been Las Vegas twice in my life -- once by accident on my honeymoon (the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was snowed in, we couldn't get to our planned destination) and then for TAM6.

I am completely unable to get the point--if there is one--of the Vegas thing. And I appreciate tacky! (I even collect tacky postcards.) It's just too much of a muchness: Yes, there is some cool stuff to see--like the lifesized replica of the David at Caesar's Palace--separated by miles of excess neon, filth, cigarette smoke, and obsessive behavior. So I'm thrilled that TAM7 will be off the Strip proper.

I wasn't too mobile this time, but between the heat and the cool stuff to do at the Flamingo, I really didn't care. So I echo the sentiment that if you want to Do Vegas, plan on doing it before or after TAM.

I find the whole concept of a JREF bowling tournament delicious--and I hereby nominate "homeopathic points" for Great Concept of July. I should point out there is also an equestrian center there, so we can have the first JREF Lady Godiva Ride... (JLGR)

On the subject of international TAMs, yes, I would be disappointed if we lost some of our overseas participants, BUT...how many more skeptics will get the soul-saving refreshment of being around Real People for 4 days if there is an event in their quarter of the globe?? Besides, this will always be THE TAM (TTAM), the others will be Local TAMs (LTAMs).

I think I've done my bit for creating confusing initials for today!

Art, I've no idea whether you've visited the States before. I always worry about foreigners who only come to the States for TAM in Vegas and walk away with a very skewed vision of America.
I hear you. No, I've never been to the US - the furthest I've been out of Australia is Fiji. But at the same time I'm very well aware of the crazy-place-ness of Vegas though the inexorable march of US culture across the world. I have no desire to go to Vegas. In fact, if I happened to be in the US for other reasons, I'd actively avoid Vegas. But TAM is there, so that's where I want to go.

I support both of those ideas! :D

I had an intriguing thought the other night. What would be the chances of getting Stephen Colbert to TAM7?

Probably not so good. He's a practicing Catholic and Sunday School teacher and might not enjoy the atheism focused parts of TAM. Depending on his schedule we could possibly book "Stephen Colbert" to appear as a performer. I bet it would be prohibatively expensive though.

But your point is well-taken. I've speculated why "The Strip" continues to have such an appeal with TAM organizers. Might it be that there is probably more conference room square footage per capita than just about anywhere else and therefore might be cheaper to organize? Or could it be that Mr. Randi values the participation of Penn & Teller? Jeff Wagg did mention that they were looking at other venues in other cities.

With the exception of the forum party which was across the street at Caesar's, I pretty much stayed at the Flamingo and hung out with the skeptic peeps. I would have been happy to do that at any hotel in any city. However, as long as the meeting is held in Vegas, I will partake in those activities which will remain in Vegas.:o

For me, the fact that TAM was in Vegas was one of the reasons that i went. Now, that wasn't the whole reason of course, TAM being the main reason, but i would have found it difficult to justify the trip (and expense) if it had only been for a 4-day trip to TAM. I extended the trip because i have wanted to visit Vegas for a long time, being an avid poker player, and this made it worth the travelling and expense.

I know i make it sound like TAM was just a side venture while i was there, but it WAS the main reason. I would not have gone to Vegas this year if TAM wasn't there, and may have not gone to TAM this year if it wasn't in Vegas, although now i've been once, and met some of you cool guys and gals, i will try my very best not to miss another, regardless of the location.

I figured as much. It was just a thought.

Colbert is WAY busy. We've tried to get him for just paper interviews and he is even too busy for that these days!

BTW, tell Swoopy that I was really impressed with the interviews with Dr Tyson and Mr Savage. I'll be listening to them more than once. My son wants me to play the Savage interview for him.

JGLR it is!!

That sooo wants to be the JREF Godiva Lady Ride (JGLR).

I completely and totally agree -- then we can refer to it as the "jiggler"!

I really do ride horses, and by next year I should be down to my Lifetime Goal Weight and back into skating trim...I hereby nominate Geek Goddess to participate as well!

Do you think the event center will have dressage that week?

Maybe with a certain hawt! rider (with a specific name)? ;)

Oh, and I will definitely be in the "Hug arthwollipot" line.
:D

I was wondering whether Miss_Kitt and GG ride sidesaddle.

Hey, would you believe that I found someone on Facebook with the same name as me? In Melbourne no less? That means that there are four other people in the world that I can definitively prove exist who have the same name as me.

Sunday I discovered the the bus route "The Deuce" goes all the way from Fremont Street, down through the entire Strip and then down to the South Strip where Tam 7 will be held, so this would be an option. Its $2 per trip, $5 for a day pass.

I would guess that we would have a special bus for us to atleast the Penn and Teller show.
The Deuce does not drive down to South Point.
The shuttles will not be useful, they can't transport many people.
The South Point location makes a rental car almost mandatory.

Snip
Did I see about $3.00 for the breakfast buffet? You sure can't find anything like that on the strip anymore.
Snip
You can't find this at the South Point neither (only at half price special events).
Breakfast is currently $5.95
Lunch $7.95
Sundaybrunch $12.95
Dinner varies from $12.95 up to $16.95 (seafood)
All prices plus tax.
