I have one Muslim friend who comes along on our 'guy-holidays' (beer, meat, action movies).
He doesn't really practice, but the no-pig thing has stuck.
The whole week we work around the pig restriction, but one night we go 'sorry dude, looks like you're a vegetarian tonight'.

I had always heard it had something to do with trichinosis - but thought that seemed a little too "medical" for a stone age tribe.

If people got sick and dying from eating a certain animal, I'd think even stone age tribes would cross that animal off their dinner list.
