South Carolina, tear down that flag!

The pride should be in the newer generations' rejection of bigotry, not in the past of the shameful defeat of a failed idea.

Nikki Haley is weighing in finally. This is a big deal for South Carolina.

Watch the White Power Rangers bring up Haley being of Indian (Sikh to be exact) descent. You let one of THOSE in,look what happens....

I read your post a number of times and I am a bit confused.

April, 1865 is when the US entered the Empire Phase of it's lifespan as one only has to look at the concentration of wealth that transpired (1865-1915) with the northern railroad, mine, steel mill and oil owners/barons. When J.P. Morgan purchased Andrew Carnegie's steel mills and railroads on the golf course in ~1906, indexed to today's dollars, his check would dwarf Bill Gates' current net worth.

I had thought that a nation's empire building phase involved acquiring land and power outside of its national borders. I am unsure why domestic concentrations of wealth is representative of US empire building. Would you elaborate?

That, is what it was really all about...who was going to make all the money, going forward. Slavery was only the catalyst as subsequent Child Labor laws and the organized labor movement's gestation was accelerated by the aftermath.

What exactly was slavery the catalyst of?

Today, IMO, we're in the same slide as Athens, Rome, Vienna, London, etc. underwent as our empirical decline takes hold. Subsitute D.C. for Rome and USN, USAF, USMC, USA for Legions and the similarities are striking.

I must apologize for my ignorance of history, but I am not seeing the similarities, would you list them?

1) land & territories acquired since 1865. The places we are maintaining a military presence.

2) the american civil war.

3) economic & political power base shifting from agrarian base to industrial/urbanized power base with lethal authority/force coalescing around a powerful central government.

Add Jeb Bush & Mitt Romney. Slightly old news... Not so sure about Romney, but Bush has been fairly consistent having removed the confederate flag from Florida's stands back in 2000.

Huckabee, and Cruz dodged it when asked... while I mostly want to be optimistic that they aren't part of the popular lib stereotypes, it's something that would have done them well to take a stand on to differentiate themselves from that very stereotype. So... if they can't comment, I see no reason to have sympathy over the kind of commentary that results from their lack of desire to address.

I am still not getting it. What does Andrew Carnegie have to do with America's overseas empire building?

Also, isn't lot of America's overseas military presence (England, Germany, Japan) merely an artifact of WW II rather than the direct result of building an empire? The US did not set out to make those countries part of its "empire."

ETA: I am still having trouble with the whole empire thing. Can you ballpark a figure for the number of square miles in America's overseas empire?

2) the American civil war.

So, going back to post #80 ,
"That, is what it was really all about...who was going to make all the money, going forward. Slavery was only the catalyst.."
you are saying that The American Civil War was really all about who was going to make the money in the coming decades.

3) economic & political power base shifting from agrarian base to industrial/urbanized power base with lethal authority/force coalescing around a powerful central government.

"lethal authority/force" ?

...............
MORE ETA
should these posts be moved to a new thread given that they do not even remotely touch on how the Confederate flag should or shouldn't be used in 2015? I would make the MOD request myself, but I haven't the faintest idea what title to suggest to the MODS.

Actually, that's exactly what it was about. It was about white supremacy, which was designed to ensure that certain white people made the money.

deleted.

I misunderstood previous post

Well shoot. All us liberals that think Bill Clinton is a messiah that can never be wrong will be thrown into a quandary as we contemplate how our lives have been built around a lie.

Is it too late to impeach him?!

Back to the topic...

Wanna proudly fly the flag of White supremacy in the US? Okay, we're enemies, thanks for the warning. Wanna put it in a museum and apologize for it? I can accept it - although you get no praise for the move.

Wanna fly the flag of white supremacy at half-mast it some sort of fake mourning symbol, after years of "Trayvon was a thug" or "I want my country back!" Nope, rejected. The simple fact that that it took a terrorist attack by a white supremacist to consider this is a disgrace.

And no, Haley babbling about how they didn't have rioting is not intelligent.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan,

TEAR DOWN THAT FLAG!

seriously?

Seriously?

You fly all the other flags at half mast, yet leave the racist symbol up a full mast?
Seriously? People are back to this idiotic race card whine about the Confederate flag? And it's trendy now because one lunatic white supremacist went nuts? As if ranting about the flag has any connection?

seriouslyreallyreallyseriouslyreally?

All hail the PC Gestapo, who will tell you what something means even if it doesn't, cuz there's their opinion and the wrong one. And if you disagree, you are a racist and to be vilified in classic PC race card passive aggressive fashion. Sieg heil!

What's a disgrace is thousands of black men are killing black men and you pious libs couldn't care less. Your whole life and ideology is built on symbols and bogey men.

Its quite intelligent to speak about the contrast of Ferguson, Baltimore and Charleston. The first two show a bunch of race baiters trying to tear a country apart. Charleston shows a group of people pulling the country together.

All in the south, imagine that.

First - actually, liberals like me mentor inner-city kids to help them. What do you do to help?

Second- if symbols aren't important, why is the Confederate battle flag standing directly outside of the Capitol of the state?

Well, no actually, the first two show what happens when police go wild and attack people in their own home.

Care to discuss the white supremacy flag?

Quoted for irony.

Can you explain who in this thread is approaching the issue in a passive aggressive fashion?

Also, you said a great deal, but I still don't understand your position. Is the flag not a symbol of racism at all? Is it a symbol of racism to some people but their numbers are too small to matter? something else? What exactly is your position on the Confederate flag?

Also. Godwinning the thread? You really think the people in this thread complaining about the flag are in some way similar to Nazis?

ETA
I just realized that you may have read the OP and replied to that post without reading the thread. Did you read the thread before posting?
