South Carolina, tear down that flag!

White folks don't fly that flag as a reminder of a dark time in their history that they'll never forget so that they never return to it.

No, he's explaining why the flag is not lowered. Rather than succumbing to emotion and joining the outrage bandwagon that rolls through this site, he is being a skeptic.

Right. He's pointing out that the flag is not actually the flag of an enemy state, it is the BATTLE flag of an enemy army.

I can accept the explanation that it doesn't violate flag etiquette.

However, that causes a big problem for the "it's our heritage" supporters, because the heritage is that is the battle flag of an enemy waging war on the United States. And if they want to insist that they were Americans, they were traitors. But hey, let's be proud!

Agreed. But they should still take down that flag - and never fly it again - on any public property where equal rights are supposed to be guaranteed under the law. Skeptical flag-flying pedantry aside, it'd just be the right thing to do.

This.

Southern pride.

As to why the south prides itself on the Confederacy, I couldn't tell you.

What's to be proud about? They fought for the right to own people and were brought to heel like a bunch of dogs. Hardly an inspiring legacy, being evil and failures.

Actually what I'm doing is providing some trivia on history and obscure ceremonial rules.

As to whether or not it is appropriate to have a really big war memorial for confederate soldiers, complete with the most recognizable symbol of rebellion, in front of a statehouse, that's a different question. Seems a bit tacky to me, but it's weird how people get so wrapped in their ancestry. For my part, I have ancestors that fought under that flag, and I have ancestors that shot at the people following that flag. I'm not sure why people get so wrapped up in that sort of thing, but they do.

Reminds me of the Taliban and ISIS destroying statues and other artifacts after they conquer lands and other religions.

To be fair, the founding fathers were all traitors too. They seceded from and rebelled against England.

It is fascinating how these things get spun.

The flag isn't really part of the statehouse as such. That's why there are no other flags near it. It isn't part of a display of flags or set of flagpoles or anything. For the gawker article, I was trying to picture where it was, because the camera angle was not straight on.

Apparently, there is a confederate soldier's memorial in front of the SC stItatehouse. Part of that memorial is a confederate battle flag.

It would make no sense to lower that flag as a sign of mourning.

I photographed the SC state house about ten years ago and nothing has changed since then.

After much controversy, the Confederate flag was removed in 2000 from atop the state house. It was relocated next to the Confederate memorial in front of the building.

Belatedly, the SC legislature did give African-Americans a monument on the side of the capital building. Unlike the Confederate memorial and flag, it's easy to miss.

Nine people were killed in a mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

I don't follow news so I didn't know until I was halfway through this thread. I do wish thread starters would not assume that everyone is up-to-date on what is going on. A couple of extra lines of background information goes a long way to helping everyone understand what is being discussed and why.

that being said. I think if I lived there I would be tempted to shoot the flag with paintballs.

Omg! I need a paintball drone. That would be awesome!

Actually, I think this would be more appropriate for that flag

Actually, to extend that insane bigoted logic, why WOULD you lower that particular flag, when it's only a bunch of blacks (slaves) that were killed?

(Note, that's not how I think, rather the logic of those that wish to keep it up.)

I do want to thank Meadmaker for the trivia: nice to learn something new every day!

It makes no sense to have it up there at all.

I agree. Still doesnt give license for political hyperpartisans to distort literal legal practices regarding flags. I for one believe the flag should be removed period, but it pisses me off to see how much people are willing to distort facts to achieve an agenda. Its particularly ironic to explain the literal legal practices and be accused of wanting to defend racism.

Welcome to the new skepticism, fueled by outrage.
