Merged Smoking should be banned universally

dumbest post ever, enjoyed as long as you dont hurt anyone else. People denying second hand smoke are stupid stupid stupid.

I don't remember denying second hand smoke.

So I must not be "stupid stupid stupid".

It is a form of assault through poisons inflicted on your fellow man. It kills others slowly, but still kills them, ad kills the smoker itself. Assualt and suicide are already illegal so the precedent is already there.

It's not enough to publicly ban it, it should be probable cause for the law to enter your house take the cancer sticks from you. You know I'm right.
Aye. Hear, hear.

We should ban skiing too. It has no significant benefits, wastes a hell of a lot of money, causes hundreds of injuries every year, and there are *much* safer forms of recreation. Every parent who lets their child ski should be locked up for child endangerment.

Disgusting and offensive habit. Couldn't care less if it was banned.

why do you hate us?

A free society - free as in: freedom of choice - will have to bear the decisions of its members.

I used to smoke for fifteen or so years. As an ex-smoker. the smell makes me ever so slightly nauseous - except for delicious vanilla or cherry flavored tobacco.
But it took me a while to find out that not only the smell itself repulses me.
Also, and perhaps much more, my good and always correct ego is repulsed that other people make choices I do not agree with. How dare they?

Today, the ego gets a time-out when it acts up again and as long as no one blows smoke in my face, I am fine with people smoking.

It is their decision.

For another point, I will attempt to do my best Adam Carolla impression.

"[...]
The thing about smoking...ok, here's the thing:
At this point, we all know every little [bleep] thing about the pros and cons of smoking, right? Are we a [bleep] free society? Is America a free society? It [bleep] is, it's in the [bleep] constitution. Ok?

Fine. Glad to have cleared that up. [bleep]. These [bleep] [bleep] anti-smoker [bleep] piss me off. But here's another thing. Smokers, listen up. Are you listening? Here's the thing:
Every smoker, every addict has his cravings and I'm not talking about the 1920s fancy smoking club people...[10-minute rant]...the thing is, when it's 35 degrees, you don't have a sweater with you, or a jacket, and you think you so badly need a cigarette that need to you walk outside right now, go ahead. Go. Just [bleep] go. Because on the ashtray in your [bleep] little corner, there will be a mirror. Yeah. It's a law. Just signed last week. A mirror. A mirror above the ashtray.

So now, when you are standing there, shivering and sucking on your butt, take a good look in the mirror. Take a good look in the mirror, my friend. Long look in the mirror. Long, hard look.

i dont know, is it a freedom issue?
when i smoke outside of my apartment, i mostly take the freedom aways from people to breath air without my somke in it. :boggled:

I know you're wrong. Your logic, "Assualt and suicide are already illegal so the precedent is already there" is very wrong because one can use that statement to ban alcohol, sugary snacks, sports, cars, growing old and quite a number of other things as well.
^ This.

*lights cig and resists the urge to Godwin the thread*

Perhaps you're being sarcastic, but I agree with you. The negative externalities of smoking, especially economic costs to the nation, far outweigh the benefits individuals get from drugging themselves.

So all human behaviour should be reduced down to simple cost-benefit analysis? That'll make life fun then...

Save up all your cigarette butts for a week and store them in a plastic bag. At the end of the week, stick your nose in and take a big whiff. That's what you guys smell like.

You smell like Teen Spirit.

I was in a bar the other day, chatting to a perfectly legal but probably inappropriately young, pretty woman. I went out for a cigarette and when I came back she noted that I smelt of cigarette smoke. I apologised - having been browbeaten by illogical but determined self-appointed persecutors for many years now, it came naturally to me. She waved it away. "I like it", she said. It probably helped that she'd already seen me perform, and that I'm both charming and gorgeous. Maybe she'd have objected more strongly at smelling it on some ugly slob who was leering at her drunkenly.

But she liked it.

You don't, apparantly.

Decisions, decisions...

I concede that if I'd spent a week in a plastic bag full of dog-ends she may not have enjoyed the lingering aroma quite as much. Fortunately, I wash myself and my clothes fairly often and quite diligently, so I smell nothing like your ludicrous example. Personally, I find the smell of old, incontinent people pretty appalling. I shouldn't be at all surprised if no pretty young women say they like my aroma when I'm old and incontinent. But I can't imagine joining in with a rising social pressure to penalise and demonise old age or incontinence. And don't tell me people don't choose old age. Socially responsible people should terminate their own lives before they offend anyone's olfactory sensibilities. Oh, and on the spot fines for public flatulence, with the stocks for anyone who lets one go in a lift.

Wow. Just wow. That the above isn't even true demonstrates that the smoking nazis really can't put a coherent argument together in favour of prohibition. Can you come up with anything more intelligent than a retort of "yooooooo smelllllll! nah nah nah-nah naaa" that wouldn't be out of place in a children's playground?

Each time we have a discussion about tobacco smoking on JREF the standard of intellectual rigour dips hugely. About this time last year there was a decent discussion on the research into SHS, economic impacts of bans and such like. Now, it's just evangelical mud-slinging from the sanctimonious antis.

I thought this was supposed to be a forum for critical thinkers. Prohibitionists sound so like religious fanatics and I'll wager they give them short shrift on the religion sub-forums. Hypocritical, much?

Speaking as someone who has stopped smoking for just over a year, I heartily agree with this sentiment. In the meantime, standing outside doorways to have a drag should be banned and the smokers made to stand at least 50m from any building. bTheir clothes stink, so no clothes allowed, but a simple plain paper suit.
