Merged Smoking should be banned universally

when our smell is a criteria we also have to bann Garlic and Beans.

Children smell bad, are a health risk, and have unsightly habits.

I propose we universally ban them.

Also dogs.

I would agree, but I got heavily rebuked by another poster on the I Hate Children thread for voicing my deep loathing for the sounds that emanate from children's mouths (and I didn't even get a chance to mention what they smell like - OMG! :jaw-dropp ), so my trap is firmly shut on this one.

Also dogs.
What about dogs that smoke?

I'd like to propose an experiment to all smoking enthusiasts, who have thought about no more "politics as usual" and [...] taking [the] fight for what's right - for Alaska - in a new direction.

Ingredients:
1 smoker
1 zip-lock bag
1 pack of white handkerchiefs
cigarettes as needed

For one week, exhale smoke in or through your hanky, one hanky per cig. Store in zip-lock bag. At the end of the week, sit down at your kitchen table. Bring zip-lock bag(s) and children.

If you don't have children and are a woman: Bring a graphic of your reproductive organs. Men: Bring a freshly squeezed specimen. Set it in the centre of table.

Place hankies on table. Allow yourself a couple of minutes to let it sink in.

I stopped the experiment on the second day. The smell of cold, used hankies almost made me yak. I did not smoke for two whole days.

After a couple of failed attempts, I finally took the fight for what's right - for me - in the right direction.

Sheesh. Look, there is no doubt that smoking is unhealthy. Second hand smoke can cause damage. There's no debate about that. And yes, it does leave a lingering smell on a smoker and people who live with smoker.

The point is this: if it is banned on the basis that it is a) unhealthy for the consumer and the people around her/him and b) it smells bad, then there's a list of many things that people do everyday that should be banned for the same reason. The very first thing I can think of is cars.

Cars pollute and their pollution can cause cancer. They smell bad while idling, and they can cause damage to not only the driver but anyone on the road.

Alcohol is another. Drinking can cause a person to get violent causing damage to others, and have you ever smelled a drunk person?

Sports, sex, etc, there's a whole list of things that one can do that can cause injury to themselves and others and after doing it, one smells bad.

Now I'm not slippery sloping here. I'm not saying that "if we ban cigarettes, these things are next on the list". What I am saying is that banning cigarettes for the reasons you are listing doesn't matter. If an individual chooses to smoke, that is their choice, just like having an individual choose to drive an SUV on a busy highway. Both have different levels of dangerous, both can kill more than just the person using the item, and both will make someone smell badly.

To me, this whole anti-smoking thing has gotten out so over the top, that it's beginning to look like prejudice to me.

I quit smoking for the past 4 months after doing so for 30 years.
I never realized how badly cigarette smoke smelled until I had about a week of not smoking in.

That being said I believe that everyone in the world should only do things I like in a way I like it.
If anyone should ever dare decide to not do something I like in a way I like it they should be punished quite severely.

All my thoughts, hopes, dreams, feelings, actions and decisions should always and at all times be considered normal and correct by every other person on the planet.
If anyone should ever dare disagree with me regarding anything then they should be punished severely.

Or

Not.

Or at least made to issue regular payments to the medical profession. We could figure it out capitation, based on the overall incidence of particular cancers in the general population compared to the patient base of each practice. That would be the easiest way to blur the link and wiggle the numbers, so the practices would get more money and the manufacturers wouldn't have such a direct customer-to-patient link like you'd get if they only paid for each particular smoker's case. This is totally workable.

I wonder if they couldn't argue it the other way - that the medical professionals should be paying them for sending more business.

Cigarette manufacturers might need to pay for cleanup though, I was shocked when I learned just how much those butts build up on the ground.

Of course not, that's a ridiculous idea, even as a joke it's not even worth considering! The money flow should definitely go the other way, in huge sums.

I'd like to propose an experiment to you. Sit on it Potsie.

dumbest post ever, enjoyed as long as you dont hurt anyone else. People denying second hand smoke are stupid stupid stupid.
I don't deny that second hand smoke exists. Yup, there's goes some now. :D

I wonder, Mikeyx, have you taken a close look at all the epidemiological studies that have been carried out on exposure to SHS and cancer? Can you tell me exactly how many of them demonstrate a statistical significance in terms of increased morbidity and mortality in those experiencing long term exposure (living with smoking partners)?

Nope...... didn't think so.

It is a form of assault through poisons inflicted on your fellow man. It kills others slowly, but still kills them, ad kills the smoker itself. Assualt and suicide are already illegal so the precedent is already there.

It's not enough to publicly ban it, it should be probable cause for the law to enter your house take the cancer sticks from you. You know I'm right.

This is a great idea. With the weak economy and the proliferation of medical marijuana dispensaries, unemployment rates for drug dealers and hitmen are at an all time high, and gun and ammo sales are sluggish. A tobacco ban would give the lagging gang and drug sector the boost that it so badly needs. :D

Don't expect an answer until May at the earliest.

Gave up smoking nearly 4 years ago after smoking for over 25 years. Dont miss it but nor do I bear it any grudges.
As far as outright banning goes, it is bad enough that people are already treated the way smokers are for partaking in a totally legal passtime.
Smokers need to demand more leeway from the government due to the additional taxes they already pay.

On a side note I must say that, as a side effect to smokers being treated like social pariahs and confined to little smoking areas in most public places, I met many people I would never have met and had many interesting conversations.

When I'm at a party or something I find myself hanging out with the smokers because they are cooler.

......and I don't smoke. :)
