It is interesting to see how meta Republican obstruction has become. Not content to stymy Democratic administrations, now a sub-party of the Republican party is gleefully sabotaging the rest of the party.

It's fractal intentional dysfunction.

Seems an unavoidable outcome of a party deliberately pandering for decades to the worst "government can't do anything and shouldn't try" impulses in our society. Reaping, sowing, etc.

It's a real bummer, but the Republicans keep proving that "make government such a nightmare that nobody but us is willing to deal with it" seems to be a winning strategy, from the humblest school board to the highest legislative bodies in the nation. The persistence hunting version of politics, eventually normal people will become exhausted from dealing with the never-ending torrent of nonsense and disengage.

power concedes nothing without a demand. Go along to get along is not really a great way to get what you want, even if it makes people like you more.

Say what you will about the far-right in the Republican party being evil and stupid and all the other correct criticisms of them, they are proving themselves to be very capable political operators. They punch way above their weight class. There's lessons to be learned that apply even outside their reactionary, neo-fascist worldview.

I see it as more that the conservative ideology is more compatible with the rampant corruption that runs this country. Dems are often dealing with conflicts of interests between their supposed liberal values and the interests of the moneyed classes that Republicans generally don't have to worry about because they are openly and proudly illiberal.

It is also asymmetrical. The Republicans aren't trying to use the federal government to advance a Republican agenda. Dismantling the federal government is the Republican agenda.

But poverty is a nessacary evil, like homelessness for the glory of capitalism. So it is downright un-American to fight poverty instead of fighting the poor.

what incentive does someone have to work below subsistence wage if they are not currently starving?
Clearly, too many food stamps means not enough people desperate to work for a pittance.
How is a CEO supposed to make his bonus under these conditions ???

For those saying they need to compromise to come to an agreement, just a reminder that they already did that, with the debt ceiling. At the time, Republicans and Democrats reached an agreement about the spending levels in the upcoming budget.

Why should it have to be renegotiated?

Just because the hardliners don't like it?

By definition, the "hardliners" don't compromise. That's what the hard line means.

A deal was already negotiated between the two parties. One party is trying to back out of that agreement. How can you compromise on "live up to the agreement" or "don't live up to the agreement"?
 
Also, the "hardliners" have no interest in keeping the government running. They want to burn it all down.

They know their demands are unreasonable.

Its why they oppose compromise and being the adult in the room.
