...Shall Not Be Infringed

In fairness, that's due to sheer volume. We have more guns than people here. If even 1/10th were used in crimes, the resulting carnage would alter the earth's orbit.
Vast majority of gun owners also never commit crimes. I think its like .01% that do.

When we have school shootings and similar mass killings, it's surprising how often the guns are legal. Like, virtually every time. From the recent church killer to Sandy Hook to Parkland and the rest.

But for street crime by career criminals, of course the guns aren't legal. The brothers can't pass a background check.

The Trump Justice Department has considered banning transgender people from owning guns. Of course, this blatant infringement of the Second Amendment has not gone uncommented-upon.

I have mentioned this before. Prisoners are considered people by the US supreme court and the right of the people to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT be infringed. So prisoners can keep and bear arms. Sounds like a business opportunity.

Suspending civil rights is legal as long as Due Process is allowed.

Yep, well, much of the USA is much more dangerous than the UK. We have an epidemic of economic inequality and violent sociopaths.
We also have strong economic inequality. It's not AS bad as your country because it is still for now a first world nation, but it isn't great in a lot of places here either.

The city I live in for example has approximately 39.6% of it's children (and therefore their families) living below the poverty line. In some places in the city it's more than 50%. There's also a few areas with rampant drug use. I used to do door to door charity fundraising and had to kick needles out of my way in some of the tower blocks.

I live in a house that's been converted into flats, and the only times anyone has ever walked through my door without me expecting them were when some students turned up to view a different flat in the building and got the wrong one and one time when one of my neighbours got absolutely hammered and mistook my door for his. Both times they immediately apologised profusely upon realising the flat was occupied and left.

The only time I've ever had anything taken from my flat was when I went back to stay with my parents over lockdown and one of my neighbours thought my vacuum cleaner was for the whole house. I took it back from a communal room after explaining that no, it was mine.

No one who did not either live in the house already or was considering renting a flat in the house has ever crossed my front door without my knowledge. It just never occurs to me that they might.

Funny, but the NRA and ACLU would fight this hand in hand.

A good friend believes an armed society is a polite society. Mutual fear strategy.

I tend to disagree. Weapons enable stupid criminals to act more.

I have been in bad places as a resident and never knew violent crime. Not personally. But somehow shootings did happen within blocks of my home in most of them. Even where I live now. Three events for eight victims, all drug related. Now if there are drugs here it's quite difficult see openly.
Not my circle of friends that lot.

Not much politeness evident in the armed USA these days.

Gee...sounds like one of those heartwarming tales of innocence...

Two guys break into a house to steal guns from a safe (sounds like they knew the owner and where he had guns and how to get into the safe). Only a kid is up and around in these wee hours... who had access to a loaded handgun? And knew how to use it well enough to kill two armed men in the dark? As opposed to say, getting out of the house or waking an adult>

Totally doesn't sound like this kid was the drug dealer himself. Totally.
