Lots of school walkouts going on right now.

Student walkouts sweep the US: Live updates

I'm skeptical of how much support there is for an issue when students register their support by leaving class. If students were advocating that we pass gun laws already on the books and showing their support by remaining in class during recess and doing their homework I would be more inclined to believe them

Actually, the person in question is 17 years old. He's probably short on specifics.

What he knows is that last month he had to flee a building and then attend some funerals because a kid who they all knew was dangerous could very easily obtain an AR-15. He isn't quite sure what to do about that, but he knows it's pretty messed up.

But how else are you supposed to keep Queen Elizabeth II out?

Regarding today's school walkouts, I am on an email list from my local school district (because my kids go to school) and got this email yesterday evening:

We are writing to let you know that Adams 12 Five Star Schools has received a high volume (over 40 at this time) of anonymous Safe2Tell reports this evening raising safety concerns at each of our five comprehensive high schools (Horizon, Legacy, Mountain Range, Northglenn, and Thornton) for tomorrow March 14, 2018. We have been in contact with neighboring school districts in the Denver-metro area and this is consistent with what they are experiencing.

We anticipate the number of reports will continue to escalate throughout the evening and into tomorrow morning. The overwhelming number of reports that are coming in during this short timeframe will compromise the ability of our district security team, in partnership with local law enforcement, to investigate the credibility of each individual safety concern. It will also make it difficult for the district to provide timely updates to you about any new threats made and any adjustments we make tomorrow morning to planned activities at each school site.

We encourage parents to have a conversation with their child about tomorrow’s events and anything they may have heard or seen on social media about potential safety concerns at their school. We encourage you to determine whether your child will engage in a planned walkout; any parameters on his/her participation; and the need for him/her to immediately report any threats/concerns that come to their attention to a staff member. As you already know, the national school walkout/demonstrations have been largely publicized on social and news media for weeks. When student events occurring outside of the building and/or off campus become highly publicized, students become vulnerable to the potential actions of individuals with malicious intent.

To ensure the safety of our students, we ask that you partner with us in reminding students that staying inside of the school building is the safest place to be tomorrow. We are working in partnership with local law enforcement to provide additional safety measures for those students staying on school property but who choose to leave the building. The district security team and local law enforcement will not be able to give their full attention to any one school during the day tomorrow. As a reminder, any students leaving school grounds will not be supervised by school or district staff.

I am deeply saddened that tomorrow’s planned focus on the pervasiveness of violence within our nation’s schools has been compromised by multiple threats of additional violence, but hope that this additional information allows you to talk to your child and make informed decisions about tomorrow’s activities.

It seems as if the school district is holding recess indoors today (chaos in the gym) and the high schools and junior high/middle schools get extra LE coverage. I have not seen anything specific regarding the nature of the "safety concerns" mentioned in the email.

I don't know if there will be anything at my kid's elementary school. The walkouts in general have been stated as only being planned to last for 17 minutes, one minute for each person killed at Stoneman Douglas. Not much missing of class.

I’m trying to prevent people who have no business owning a gun from owning a gun.

I think this is a fantastic idea.

So let's think. Who has business owning a gun that can send a whole bunch of bullets into the air, accurately and quickly, equipped with magazines that make it easy to keep firing with minimal interruption? Such weapons include, but are not limited to, the AR-15.

Who has business owning such a weapon?

Hmmmm.........I can't think of anyone.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

That would include rifles such as the Ruger 10/22.

Anyone in a war zone, urban or otherwise. So perhaps USA school teachers. May give them more of a chance of surviving the run to the staff room from the carpark?

Are you saying that all black people are on public assistance?

No, I'm saying that you're using right-wing dog whistle terms to try to mask something everyone here has already figured out, so there’s no point in not being direct.

It seems like it's all he does these days...well these last thirty days. In between homework and grieving or whatever.

Do you believe every crank right-wing conspiracy theory dredged up from the bowels of the internet, or just the ones that attack underage victims of gun violence?

That will only result in further divisions and polarisation of US society, as more youngsters want gun control, but older people in power refuse.

There is also no single, clear plan from the youngsters as what to do.

It may mean that in 40 years time, there may be a generation in power who are inclined to act in a more positive way.

OK, this kid and a couple of his classmates--using their advanced social media skills and adrenaline fueled moral outrage and no outside help--were able to organize a nationwide anti-gun movement and get CNN to host a townhall meeting one week after the shooting if the kid who pitched the idea to CNN wasn't quite sure what he or she wanted the townhall to be about and couldn't come up with some specifics.

They are clearly members of the Illuminati.

Or the other way around, CaptainHowdy.

Do you not understand that there is a huge upwelling of repugnance at this event, and the media are simply reflecting that? Seems to be that there's a backlash against the NRA, too. Are you suggesting that this is all because of the survivors? (Hint: most people think it's because of the dead schoolkids, not the living ones, and because of the ridiculous extreme position that the NRA espouses).
