Yeah... it brings it home seeing the names and ages listed, doesn't it?

(well, at least it does if you have any humanity!)
I'd love to see an open coffin or two like Emmet Till's. I know that would be incredibly hard on the family, but if it made a difference....

Depending on who you read, the money spent by the NRA is dwarfed by other lobbies. I don't think there are enough politicians in the "NRA's pocket" to matter. Now people who actually talk to their representatives is another matter. Gun rights are huge with some people just like abortion rights are to others.

That's what I meant by "one-issue" voters. But those voters' views are strongly encouraged by an NRA that encourages them to believe the evil "guv'mint" is scheming to take away their guns and put the Commies in charge.

And the money really is big. The NRA spent almost a half-Billion dollars on political activities in 2016. That's a lot.

It was the fault of the FBI, not guns.

trump has spoken, it's official.

"Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign - there is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!"

What a bumbling asshat America has in the Whitehouse!

Surely any UK politician who made such a moronic self serving statement as that, about the country's law enforcement agencies, would be out of office very shortly thereafter.

You can point fingers, but I notice that unlike you, Trump did enact legislation affecting the ease with which mentally ill people can get firearms.

The reality is that school killings are done with more than guns.

But how often, compared to ones done with guns?

There are "insane" and mentally ill people everywhere in the entire world. Only in the United States are they able to inflict so much carnage on those around them, targeted or random, and it is solely because in the US they have an Easy Button: the availability guns and effortlessness and instant gratification they provide.

Yes, it is possible for a truly determined insane person to find a way to inflict massive casualties via a method other than using guns. But even the most cursory review of the rate of crimes of this type in countries other than the US makes it obvious that truly determined insane people are few and far between. When the Easy Button of guns is removed from reach, and it becomes apparent that inflicting casualties of a world-headline-grabbing magnitude would require an exceptional amount of work and effort, many violent-natured people simply can't be bothered - it is a simple and demonstrated fact. And a whole hell of a lot of people stay alive as a result.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of innocent schoolchildren."

Oh ... wait. That doesn't sound quite right.

But that's what it is. It's human sacrifice, on an industrial scale. Child sacrifice to the God of Gunpowder, whose devotees have found their personal Omelas and are satisfied with imposing the cost on everyone.

The highlighted part - that's indeed true but it's more than that. As well as simply "being bothered", it means that a momentary loss of temper is less likely to turn lethal. This is probably more important for the "bread and butter" shootings in, say road rage incidents.

The first step to better gun legislation would be to remove the Dickey Amendment and specifically task the CDC to investigate how to reduce gun violence.
Secondly, we need more law enforcement personell, and more training for said personell and the clear guideline to enforce all gun laws at are on the books.
This includes funding and equipping the ATF to keep databases of gun sellers and gun purchases.

After all this, we might already end up with a massive drop in new gun sales and the confiscation of many illicitly held weapons.

How about reducing the amount that any individual, corporation or any other organisation can donate to any political party to $100,000, and making it illegal to donate to an individual politician. The power of big business and special interest groups to influence decisions would be severely curtailed, and the NRA would no longer be able to buy politicians. Politicians then, heaven forefend, might have to represent their constituents rather than lobby groups.

.........School shootings and mass killings are going up. Coverage (sensational and otherwise) is rising also..........

Did you really say that? Really? I mean, given the chance to take this back, would you?

Because it reads like you're complaining that a massacre of kids in a school shouldn't be treated as such a big deal by the press. You'd like it normalised, maybe like a road traffic accident or something, would you?

Anybody else find this incredibly stupid?

And get the pricetag:

In another article, it was mentioned that the building was constructed in 2009, so it's unlikely to be functionally obsolete.

Look, the building did nothing. A couple of fresh coats of paint will get rid of the blood spatters on the wall. Yes, I am sure that it will be difficult for students and teachers to enter the building again. I suspect strongly it will be difficult for them to go back to any of the buildings in the school.

This is the only action that will be taken. Nothing else will be done. The price of freedom is nowhere near high enough for americans to actually tackle the problem. It never will be. The guns are too precious.

But the building's gotta go...

Did anyone really expect him to take the high ground?

Just when you think The PDJT can't go any lower...

Actually, I never think that.

So do many of the students. It feels different this time.

It won't be. Speaker Ryan will as always be "collecting the facts" to "avoid trampling the rights of law-abiding citizens". Thoughts and prayers and then defer to the next shooting occurs. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Nothing at all will be done.

A very smart person, expert bomb-maker Ted Kaczinki, managed to kill only 3 people and injure 23 other. To do this he used 16 bombs over a period of 17 years.
