School shooting Florida

Presumably the suggestions already made, so arm the teachers when they are in school, replace glass in schools with bulletproof glass, reinforced walls and doors so can't be shot through,
Not the solutions I would go for but in a democracy, or even a republic, if that is what people believe to be right then that is what they should get out and campaign for. I suspect it will cut little ice in the current situation, and I personally believe that better gun control across the whole of the USA, not state by state, is where the current movement wants to head. But if people trully believe in those ideas they should be given room to express them and produce some evidence that they will do more good than better gun control.

Can you explain the term 'dog whistles' as used in this context, please? I see it a lot online, but have never really understood it.

A real "dog whistle" is a whistle that emits a sound in a frequency range that is above what human ears can hear, but within the range that dogs can hear. Therefore, it is silent to humans, but audible to dogs. They have been used to tell dogs to come back to their masters, without disturbing the people nearby.

In the context of speech, it refers to "hidden meanings" that are picked up on by supporters, even though the words do not have the literal meaning. It's a "secret message" of sorts, audible to the supporters.

ETA: Ah. I see that Darat's link described the term.

It’s fine for children to speak like children.

It’s embarrassing for adults to act like petulant children when schoolkids suggest maybe some tighter restrictions on guns might allow them to make it to adulthood.

In the larger context of things, it's always amusing when 'won't someone think of the children' gets tossed by the wayside when something else more precious needs to be protected.

The right wing is trying to spin Emma as being a bully. She said they ostracized him, which merely means that they did not accept him as a peer. Cruz was blatantly racist and had expressed support for Nazism when he was in high school. To expect people to accept him, or even tolerate him, when he used hate speech is dumb. It is so strange that the right wing defends Nazis openly these days, they used to use dog whistles.

I don't know if everyone ostracized him. At the Denver March for Our Lives, I heard Maddie King speak. She's one of the other Stoneman-Douglas survivors. Here's the video of her speech:

At the 7:14 minute point, she points out that she met the shooter, knew him, and tried to befriend him.

At the 10:05 mark, she starts listing proposals. Unlike what has been frequently accused, these kids ARE putting forward coherent proposals, and most of those proposals do NOT involve taking all the guns away.

A skeptic forum should understand that appeals to emotion are not an acceptable substitute for reason and logic.

And yet, we have people here in the forum opposing gun control, because it is fun to shoot at paper targets. Because they feel irrational fear and want to protect themselves from mythical bogeymen.

Last time I checked, fun and fear are emotions.

Nothing exposes a conspiratard theory as much as a mainstream media source admitting that the very thing that has been dismissed as a "conspiracy theory" is actually what really happened.

Okay, I think I’ve got it now. A ”conspiratard theory” is a conspiracy theory that no one claimed existed about something that is common knowledge. It’s basically a conspiracy theory to explain the absence of a conspiracy theory. For use only when regular stupid just won’t cut it, and you need to get meta-stupid.

Now that Emma has admitted to bullying Cruz since they were in middle school, her credibility as an anti-gun anti-violence advocate is shot. Not only is she not a victim of a school shooting, she is one of the people who actually provoked it!

You can always tell a person is lying about what someone else said when they don’t bother to provide a quote.

Fox and Friends is leading the charge.

How wrong are thee, let me count the ways.

At least three.

Which means the right wing can dismiss her as a friend of a mass murderer, of course.

Dave

Which means they have all their bets covered. Anyone who was weirded out by his racist, neo-Nazi rhetoric is a bully, and anyone who tried to tried to overlook that and not ostracise him is a mass-murderer groupie.

That pretty much discounts all of them, I guess.

Zachary Cruz told police that he didn't have any guns. They searched his house and didn't find any. This is what will be happening under the new Florida laws when people who are deemed a risk are found.

Sun Sentinel said:
Cruz was the second person in Broward County ordered to turn over his weapons as part of a risk protection order, a new law enforcement tool that allows police to remove weapons from people considered at risk of using them unlawfully.

I wonder if it will turn into a lawyer's bonanza. Someone gets reported as a potential threat. A house is searched. Guns may or may not be found and/or seized. Target of search sues people who called him a potential threat.....

In the UK, when someone is bullied (like my niece) they can sometimes be removed from school, sometimes some action is taken against the bullies and it works, sometimes, tragically, a bullied child commits suicide. What doesn't happen is that a bullied child takes an easily available gun into school and kills 17 people. You can tackle bullying, you can tackle mental health issues but untill you tackle gun and ammunition availability and the gun culture mentality it will only take one or two people having a bad day for more mass shootings and more deaths. And in a country of 300 Million+ people there are a lot of those people having a bad day. You don't agree that this movement has the right answers. Fine. What action do you think would address this issue? When you have identified that get out there an try and effect change. That is what these kids and the people who support them are doing and I have nothing but respect for them, including Emma.

Seems tackling the root causes of both the bullying and reaction would stop suicide and murder. While banning an object would at beast reduce the severity of the attempts to harm others.

But only one of the options let's us be ******** to conservatives so I wonder which one puerile will tend to pick.

Guess what: There's no reason we can't do both...though I would note that once again the strawman of "banning" guns is being used. I recommend taking some other tack.

That's a good one to take! Make "conservatives" the victims. Poor things.

Everybody else knows what I'm talking about or if they didn't, they know how to google something like 'emma admits to bullying cruz' and find out.
