I have never fully understood how Saudi Arabia has so much influence on human rights policy at the UN. I felt much the same when Libya seemed to be in charge of human rights policy at the UN. I suppose the UN has become a useless organisation:

Well, that's that then. King Salman's denials are obviously as convincing to Trump as Putin's.

"Donald Trump has speculated that “rogue killers” may have been responsible for the presumed death of the Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, as he announced he was dispatching the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, to Riyadh to discuss the deepening crisis with King Salman of Saudi Arabia.

After speaking to the Saudi king by phone, the US president said Salman “denies any knowledge of whatever may have happened” to the journalist and was “working closely with Turkey” to find out what happened to him.

“The denial was very, very strong,” Trump told reporters. “It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. Who knows?”

“All I can do is report what he told me. He told me in a very firm way that they had no knowledge of it. He said it very strongly,” Trump said."

Finally, two weeks after he was disappeared and presumably killed, Turkish police are searching through the consulate... just hours after the cleaners were there.

I also love how contradictory the Saudi explanations are becoming: he left the consulate quickly ("within 10 minutes or an hour") yet they are now unofficially suggesting to the likes of Trump and others that he was actually disappeared by some "rogue killers" in the embassy...

In any case, Saudi Arabia abusing its diplomatic previliges to kidnap or murder people is outrageous enough. This exactly the kind of gangster state behaviour that the likes of Russia and Iran might engage in. A little hypocrisy I feel; my guess is the US has carried more extra judicial executions of Saudis than Saudi Arabia has. I wonder how many Saudi citizens have been subject to enhanced interrogation techniques / torture consequent on being rendered (kidnapped) to countries where they can be tortured or disappeared into CIA black sites. How many Saudis are held by the US in off shore military establishments to deny them constitutional rights? The US does not accept that human rights are legitimate so criticising countries for participating in UN human rights organisations seems odd.
