According to the Turks the CCTV footage from inside of the consulate was smuggled out of the country and into Saudi Arabia.

If they really transported this out of the country, instead of simply destroying the material or just turning the CCTV system off, It's quite possible that one or more of the Crown Prince's countless enemies decided to leak this. It could also been a heroic rogue whistleblower or a spy a working for Turkey.

He's a true patriot doing whatever it takes to defend those precious arms procurement contracts worth 1000 trillions of pounds. Without them Britain would be nothing... NOTHING!

Since this is a consulate of a very important country i would be very, very surprised if they had not placed the it under intense 24/7 surveillance. Not just by surrounding it by CCTV cameras and placing hidden microphones outside but also very likely including bugging it and having one or more Saudi informants working within.

There was a time when they had to be subtle, because there were actual consequences for being caught being too blatant about murdering your opponents. But that time is no more. They've seen that their supporters will let them get away with just about anything, no matter how blatant it is, and, to quote Montgomery Burns, they've decided to wallow in their own crapulence.

No police allowed, the person can be put in a diplomat's car and taken to a Saudi plane etc.

But the downside is also massive: the murder is directly tied to the nation, there will be surveillance, there's their own CCTV system. plausible deniability is out the window.

I bet they wished they'd just knifed him in front of his own apartment.

You can say they don't care, but SA needs foreign investment and some kind of good PR in many countries.

I saw on TV yesterday that there have been multiple abductions of dissidents from Paris and Geneva. Usually by drugging the person and taking them to SA to be thrown in jail.

Assassinations seldom go as well as planned.

Normally, during assassinations there are difficulties with weapons, difficulties with identifying the target, difficulties with timing, difficulties with unforeseen eventualities, and so on.

In any case, I am sure that the Saudis would have preferred to kill Khashoggi when he was well outside of their consulate and in such a way that the murder could not be traced back to Saudi Arabia. However, I expect that for some reason they had to act quickly to kill Khashoggi while he was in their consulate (which is an environment that the Saudis could control) and because his identity was clearly established (which eliminated to possibility of killing the wrong man).
