This is just a side point, but it’s bugging me.

I don’t like how Mohammad bin Salman‘s name is being reduced to MBS in the media.

It’s too familiar, too cute. Save that kind of thing for celebrities or sports stars.

But despots should be known by their name. Killers should be known by their name.

You're contradicting yourself. If consumers actually demand efficiency, then that's a very strong incentive for producers to provide it. Government cannot roll back consumer demand.

Really hard to accept that, confronted with evidence that the Saudis tortured and killed a dissident journalist in an embassy, a man who only went there because he wanted to get married, that Trump's immediate reaction was to try and play it off. He started talking about money Saudi Arabia spends on US products and services, essentially, defending Saudi torture and murder. Of course, the figure Trump cited, $110 billion, was later shown to be a complete fabrication.

What a total piece of garbage this guy is. That garbage like this could be elected president of the United States is absolutely mind blowing.

If Trump had invoked national security, the importance of the US-Saudi alliance in supporting Israel and opposing Iran, his reluctance to confront Mister Bone Saw would have been plausible.

But Trump said it was all about money: the fact that Saudis are putting money into the economy lets them literally get away with murder - as far as Trump is concerned.

He's probably not that aware of the importance of the strategic relationship and the business thing is the only thing that sprang to mind. Trump isn't exactly a professional in the geopolitics department.

All presidents before him have accepted SA's behaviour, including supporting radical Islam worldwide, the death penalty for atheists, brutal repression of the population, the death penalty for witchcraft etc etc.

Now the Saudis have become a bit careless, and out of the many thousands they have killed, this one murder is supposed to bring down the whole strategic partnership?

Trump's sin here is that he's honest about his motivations. By any moral measure, the difference between Trump and Obama is zero.

The difference between this atrocity and the thousands before it is that they murdered a US resident in a way they can't deny. And like Pinochet's idiotic decision to blow up a dissident in the middle of Washington DC, the public opinion fallout may be so bad that it forces the US government to distance themselves from their ally. Although in this case, I think the stakes are so high that any repercussions for SA will be cosmetic.
