Saudi journalist disappears in embassy, believed murdered

And once the Saudi gov officially sorta admits that Jamal Kashoggi was killed in their Istanbul consulate, will Trump say: "Very fine people on both side of the bone saw"?

I disagree. A lot of countries have huge interests in SA. The US mostly so because of the Petro-Dollar, weapons deals and god only knows how much more. SA is also the most active foreign lobbyist in the US, and not Israel as right-wing conspiritards like to believe.

The difference is that Trump is too dumb or unsophisticated to play the required political theatre around the issue. He should show a bit of fake outrage, expel some diplomats, huff and puff a bit and all the while let the strategic and economic partnership go on as usual.

You'd expect more professionalism from a hit team.

Remember the Israeli hit team that killed that Hamas guy in Dubai? Arrived on different flights from different destinations with different nationalities. Actually vacationed for a while, while staking out their target. Used a method that was supposed to look like a heart attack.

They still got found out due to CCTV being everywhere.

But what the SA guys did has caused an International incident that is forcing their allies to distance themselves from SA. It is even making the war in Yemen news here in the Netherlands.

Doing it in the consulate has not only tied this to SA, but it has also made it impossible to untie it from the state, and by extension, the 'Royals'.

I saw that China is aiming for a combination of lots of highrises in combination with community bicycles and good public transport. Beijing at least.

Good luck with that in the states. You have a 100-year philosophy of sprawl and cars.

For an individual, however, those sort of sums can set one up quite nicely for life.

What harm can a little payment from a foreign government to a democratically elected official in return for favourable treatment have...?

That sounds totally in line with what the creators of the nation had in mind

Those are rooky numbers.

My aunt lived next to a Saudi 'palace' in Southern Spain. A huge compound with a lot of personnel. The owner never even bothered to show up there. Probably bought it on a whim. I'm sure it cost more than $14 million.

Saudi investors own huge chunks of (from the top of my head) Fox News, New York Times, Twitter etc etc.

With his brief visit to Ankara to meet with the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Pompeo has touched down in the two countries most involved in the disappearance — and suspected killing — of Jamal Khashoggi, who wrote critically of the Saudi government he once served.

Pompeo pronounced his trip “incredibly successful” because of the Saudi commitment to a transparent investigation, even though he acknowledged that his discussions did not address the elemental issue of whether Khashoggi is alive or dead.

Apparently the Saudi General Consul to Turkey was sent home, stripped of his post and is now "under investigation". I guess he's fall guy #1.

“I do think it’s important that everyone keeps in their mind that we have a lot of important relationships – financial relationships between US and Saudi companies, governmental relationships – things we work on together all across the world. The efforts to reduce the risk to the United States of America from the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, Iran,” Pompeo said.

“The Saudis have been great partners in working alongside us on those issues … And we just need to make sure that we are mindful of that as we approach decisions that the United States government will take.”

Well it's a damn shame now isn't it folks? There's a very real possibility that the US government might help the Saudi's cover up this killing by not by not pushing the Saudi's too much and effectively tolerating a whitewash "investigation" that stops short of targeting the top leadership of the country.
