Saudi journalist disappears in embassy, believed murdered

I’m amazed that he is actually following some sort of rational PR strategy instead of simply inserting his foot in his mouth.
I'm not sure those two are mutually exclusive. He repeats the same strategy for any lies or unforced errors that direct evidence contradicts.

It's knee jerk: tell a ridiculous lie or boast. When confronted with evidence his fantasy is fantasy he says, "we'll see" or he might even lie some more. He waits for the exposure to fade or he simply inserts another outrageous falsehood to distract from the last one.

When you do outrageous things one or more times a day, people get attenuated.

I think I have developed some sympathy for the (former) Saudi Consul General in Istanbul, who suddenly had 15 thugs and black op types arrive at his embassy to grab, torture, murder, and dissect Khashoggi with him apparently having say in the matter. Instead it was made clear even as the blood and gore were flowing that he should just keep quiet if he wanted to live a nice and long life on return to Saudi Arabia. I can only imagine this guy leading a typical polite, dignified diplomatic life style only to suddenly find himself in the middle of a horror show.

I'd want to know how involved he was in the setup before feeling too much sympathy.

"We'll see"
"You're guilty until proven innocent"
"rogue killers"
"Saudi king had a very strong denial of involvement."
"Let's investigate"
"who knows?"

Given the country I'd have to consider that the "dignified diplomatic life style" is "you only have to watch murders now".

Don't worry people. Give them a couple more days to come up with something even a little more believable than "he disappeared". They have given their word (!) that they will have a completely fair, impartial and transparent investigation.

Considering that Saudi Arabia doesn't even pretend to respect the rule of law and can't hold such an investigation I'm only interested in seeing how Pompeo and Trump will try pretend that they can now let this "regrettable incident" go away and move on to more important things.

The very civilized House of Saud will lop off someone's head, say that they did it, and that will be that.

Are Sweden and Britain raising their fists to punch Saudi Arabia?

Repubs smearing Khashoggi as a terrorist sympathizer. Soon they'll be saying he got what he deserved.
Hard-line Republicans and conservative commentators are mounting a dark whisper campaign against Jamal Khashoggi that is designed to protect President Trump from criticism of his handling of the dissident journalist’s alleged murder by Saudi Arabian operatives — and support Trump’s continued aversion to a forceful response to the oil-rich desert kingdom.

Let's see....

It’s not that long ago, a matter of weeks, that MPs were writing articles praising MBS in the the Huffington Post, or The Guardian was accepting ad revenue to praise Saudi Arabia’s great reformer. The empire knows no loyalty and has no interest in consistency.

The recent media blitz on MBS stemming from the alleged murder of Khashoggi, tells us he is currently out of favour. And this is all it tells us. It may be meant to remind him and certainly should remind us of where the power really lies. It’s a signifier of his real place in the scheme of things, and how quickly he can be demonised and disposed of if the real powers that be should choose.

Wait, the reason for positive coverage followed by negative coverage is because they liked him then they did t?

It can't be they covered things positively because they thought his actions were positive followed by finding his actions negative. Oh no.

A human walks into a building and never is seen to exit, and there is no evidence of their well being since they entered the building.

This.

Even without it on video or audio, how else do you explain that?

He entered the building. He never left. His fiance was waiting outside, but he never left.

Murdering someone in your consulate is frowned upon these days and does put you out of favour.

No but we might diplomatically snub them. What America does in this situation is more important not only because the Saudis are almost completely dependent on American military hardware and assistance.

US officials are putting sustained pressure on Mohammed bin Salman to blame one of his favoured generals – the deputy head of Saudi intelligence – for the presumed death of Jamal Khashoggi, a move the*Trump administration*believes could allow both Washington and Riyadh a way out of the escalating crisis.

General Ahmed al-Assiri is one of the embattled crown prince’s most trusted security officials, a senior air force officer who was the Saudi face of the Yemen war for more than a year before being thrust into the intelligence role. He is entrusted with the most sensitive state secrets and if, as is widely alleged, the kingdom was responsible for Khashoggi’s disappearance, would have have almost certainly been a party to plans.

Officials in Washington have suggested for the past three days that a senior figure in Riyadh was central to the apparent plot to lure Khashoggi into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where he is believed to have been tortured and killed by state security officials. Their insistence, however, has been met with blanket denials by Prince Mohammed, who continues to eschew any Saudi link to a disappearance that has become the most significant foreign policy crisis of Trump’s presidency, and battered the kingdom’s global reputation.

Apparently this is what Pompeo meant by "moral clarity". Disgusting abomination.

Uh huh as though the official attack dog went off the rails without specific orders.

Ollie North?

Or they have no evidence and Muslim Brother Khashoggi is happily in honeymoon on a yacht in Cyprus waters with his new girlfriend who is a longtime protege of Muslim Brother Erdogan, while the latter is loudly laughing while feeding horror stories through his purged media and intelligence to the western pre$$titutes.

Well if he is alive we all know he isn't hiding out in Venezuela cuz that place is a **** hole
