Sarah Palin!

This troubles me:

Surely a good presidential candidate would exercise a great deal of due diligence in making his VP choice. Completely independently of Palin's qualification, McCain met with her once and his staff did not visit Alaska as part of the vetting process? Forget Palin, this speaks volumes about McCain's qualifications to be Prez. Do we want another bozo who is going to govern from his gut? Four more years, indeed.

ETA: After a couple minutes thought, I find I'm even more outraged. This displays a degree of carelessness that even I would not have imagined of McCain. WTF is too mild.

Also, this shows alot about their character.

Obama debated with Biden, they've criticized eachother, they know where they stand on the key issues and where they differ. Obama doesn't seem to be afraid of having a running mate who has already some gravitas, alot of experience and knowledge, especially about foreign policy. This shows he's not afraid of being challenged, and wants to be kept on his toes. It shows he sees his presidency as a team effort.

McCain seems to have chosen a relatively unknown, someone who won't make alot of waves, and won't challenge him, someone he can mold. Seriously, what possibly could she bring to the table, what advice could she give him, how could she challenge him in order for him to make the best decisions? It shows he's more insecure about himself.

Your theory is ludicrous, if he is forced to change his candidate, that'll kill him. Goodbye credibility.

The story is Palin faked her pregnancy. The child belongs to Palin’s 16 year-old daughter. This explains why Gov. Palin returned to work early.

I guess you could call this scandal: Waterbreak.

from the comments section:

Palin announced her pregnancy at 7 months. She flew to the conference in Austin when he was (allegedly) at 8 months. While she was there, her water (allegedly) broke, and she flew for 9 hours, 15 minutes back to Anchorage, with a plane change in Seattle -- without telling anyone, because the airline never would have let her board -- and (allegedly) gave birth to a 6 pound, 2 ounce preemie. Three days later, this 44-year-old woman was back at work, none the worse for the wear. I'm not believing it.
Sounds like Obama's birth certificate may not be the only one of interest in this election. ;)

If she did as reported, it raises serious questions about her judgment. An airplane is not where you want to be while in premature labor with a child with Down syndrome, especially a 5th pregnancy that can progress very rapidly.

If it's her daughters child, it raises questions on the thoroughness of McCain's vetting process and on her own judgment, thinking that she could keep this hidden. In this case I would expect her to step down.

I admitted it was a frivolous theory, but even still this is a huge gamble that could very well backfire. With that political machine behind him and all of the conservative, vetted, safer candidates, one has to wonder if this doesn't destroy his credibility.

If those facts are correct then that could be a pretty big story. They would either add up to pretty reckless poor judgement or a cover story for someone else's baby.

God American politics is fantastic! Why can't we have similar levels of intrigue in Britain? :)

It's not uncommon for a 44-year-old woman to have a baby with Down's syndrome. It's extremely rare (practically unheard of) for a 16-year-old to have a baby with Down's syndrome.

I agree. She will be off the ticket within a week. Probably the Republican Convention will be delayed a week due to the hurricane. This is reminiscent of Senator Eagleton.

It is by no means unheard of. The risk to a 44 year old woman is 30 times higher than the risk to a 16 year old, but the risk to a 16 year old is still 1 in 1250 births. This calculates out to about 600 Downs pregnancies in teens per year.

The early polls say this may be a miscalculation

Don't trust E&P; it's notoriously far left in outlook. Let's look beyond the headline:

Here's a finding from Gallup: Among Democratic women -- including those who may be disappointed that Hillary Clinton did not win the Democratic nomination -- 9% say Palin makes them more likely to support McCain, 15% less likely.

Oh, horrors! Only 9% of Democratic women say this pick makes them more likely to support McCain? And here I thought fully all the Democratic women were going to come over to McCain!

ETA: Well, it's even worse that what I thought; typical E&P. Gallup itself speculates that the Palin pick may help McCain:

The Palin pick may help John McCain close the gap in support with Barack Obama among white, female independents.

She could become the worst president in history some day. There is little evidence to support either prediction
That went unsaid. If someone here has a way to predict future events by what politicians say now, my hat stands tipped.

And this is based on what? Someone else stated that he has only met her once. I have not seen any claims that they have any sort of personal relationship. I think it far more likely that he will use her to get elected and then send her off to attend funerals. She brings no particular expertise to the table that McCain could exploit.

Because she's a girl and you don't pick on girls. Cheney is about the only VP I've ever seen who actually did meaningful stuff. Sure, evil and dark stuff, but nobody can say he was a sideline sitter. Most VP's are sideline sitters.

gdnp, see my #496. He didn't have a vetting process, thorough or otherwise.

I do love a good old fashioned sex scandal, but I fail to see the potentially party-damaging-trajectory here. Huge Story: Mom sacrifices her own reputation because of love for her child. Uh, yeah. Gonna really go after that one.

As I said (somewhere): If she was covering for her daughter, then there may be a backlash of sympathy. It still raises the question of judgment, for Palin for not disclosing this to McCain and expecting it not to come out once the media spotlight comes on and for McCain for inadequately vetting her before picking her.

But Joe Biden is a Roman Catholic.

I was raised Roman Catholic, My whole family was pro life, creationist and against same sex marriage...

Must be a different Roman Catholic church Biden attends, do you think?

WTF? Catholic and Creationist? :boggled:
The Catholic Church explicitly supports evolution.
