Sarah Palin!

Really? ew.

How much of a proponent? Are we talking straight from the Bible and nothing else? Side-by-side with evolution? ID? Teach the controversy?

No need to worry. All of her conservative credentials are politically calculated. She presents herself as a “hockey mom” who just happened to fall into politics. Previously, she ran for Lt. Governor and lost.

McCain/Paler '08

Unfortunately, that one might actually resonate with some people. (where's MaGZ when you need him?)

:D

Here.
So who will get the Angry White Male vote this year?

Doesn’t this all seem a bit like Affirmative Action?

Excellent choice, the best choice he could have made.

She's been on the horizon in conservative blogs for weeks. She's also not tied to Washington and its politics. She's enormously popular in Alaska, and I think she'll be equally popular as VP.

She has more executive experience than anyone on either ticket. She has as much foreign policy experience, probably, as Obama, and certainly more budget experience.

I'm energized by the choice, personally. I would NOT be energized with any of the others who could have been chosen.

These conservative blogs you speak of? Are they neocon blogs that want a war in Iran? How is it these guys know so much about Palin?
And one more question,
Is she good for the Jews?

My State congresswoman had a position on Iraq in 2006. Everyone did.

Hell, Obama gave a speech in 2002 when he was a State senator.

And what does it say that she didn't have any national positions one year ago?

No, your state congresswoman stated an opinion. Two different things. Same as Obama, who had designs on presidency as soon as he became mentioned for Senate.

Who gives a flying fart about a state senator's position on national issues since they can't do anything about it?

again, she wasn't even mentioned for national office until earlier this year. If she did have a ready made platform, you and the other cheerleaders would be all over her for planning this.

It's the "Ape Rape" joke that has never been verified, nor the rumor that he called his wife a **** (rhymes with punt).

But the Chelsea Clinton joke is well documented.

ETA, never mind. This thread is moving to fast to keep up with all the sub-conversations.

Well I found out about the pick this morning when I finished setting up for my Arlecchino act this weekend and all of the Hillary folks who were still resisting voting for Obama were suddenly wearing Obama 08 T shirts. There were only 8 of them but we'll see how this plays out.

I just watched a replay of her speech and it was nice but nothing special as far as delivery. Does anyone know if this is typical of her or does she have the proverbial "gift O gab". I ask because if she does, that may be a big reason for the pick.

Wake up call:

How is her being a governor of a state inexperience at the executive level?

Bill Clinton was a governor of a low rent state, did that make him unable to be a president?

DR

I wonder if Palin is a member of the CFR and Trilateral Commission like Bill Clinton? If she is what would you make of that?

After reflecting on this for a good part of the day, I think the main message McCain is sending with this pick is that he doesn't take any of this seriously. He cares more about getting elected than about governing well. He's the most cynical panderer to be nominated by a major party in decades.

When I heard about Palin, my first thought wasn't that McCain was trying to convince the Clinton supporters to vote for him, but rather to try and convince them to stay home altogether. Which would be equally disastrous for Obama.

Yes, yes, I am the irrational one here. We cheerleaders are one, and you can perfectly read our minds.

Two things could make this Hail Mary by John McCain backlash horribly.

1. Palin could prove a disaster under the spotlight. Her beauty contest experience aside (zing!), she's set up for "What's the difference between Sunni and Shia" gotchas. If she flounders, all Biden will have to do is show up and be gracious.

2. The more likely to me is Palin's ties to the oil industry. I'm expecting that they are going to be much more than we know about right now. If she was Big Oil's puppet to maintain control of Alaska in the wake of the VECO scandal, then Obama's More of the Same campaign theme won't even have to bat an eye to include her in the talking points.

Good point.

Agreed. Also, it just so lacks class. It doesn't speak well of a person's character.

The same could be said of having oral sex with an intern in the oval office but I'm just saying...

If you want to dig up old stuff, how about Joe Biden's little faux pas with plagerism in law school and the puffing (a generous term) of his school records? The reason he did not complete the run for the presidency in 1988.

I was in college then, I remember discussing it in class.

Bottom line, everyone has done things they regret.

Let's move on to the current election and events that have not yet been addressed.

Beyond their gender, on which issues do Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin agree? I have a hard time believing that 5 million Hillary supporters will vote for McCain just because he selected a women who is pro-life, against same sex marriage, and a creationist as his running mate.

But Joe Biden is a Roman Catholic.

I was raised Roman Catholic, My whole family was pro life, creationist and against same sex marriage...

Must be a different Roman Catholic church Biden attends, do you think?

According to an informal poll amongst my friends, yes. I live in a highly Republican area. I asked about 15 friends of mine, aged mid-30's to mid-40's only one of whom is a Dem. All of them were disgusted and I didn't even bring up the fact that the kid was disabled. I posted this on a knitting forum I belong to and they have been disgusted too.

Lisa, here is the nicest way I can say this.

I love my mom. She tends to vote Democrat, though she worked for John Anderson's campaign in 1980. She voted Kerry in 2004.

I love my wife, who tends to vote conservative. She is the mother of our children. Heck, she tends to vote more conservative than I do.

Your rant on this topic, from the opening "disgusted" has been a less than stellar reflection on women/mom voters, as it has come off (perhaps unintentionally) as a single issue bias. I appreciate that you are entitled to your opinions, and that each of us have experiences that inform our opinions.

It occurs to me that Governor Palin likely had the means to provide for health care and home care for her children, disalbed or no, that many moms don't. Is that what grounds your disgust, a bit of economic jealousy, or does that have nothing to do with it?

Yes, Bill Clinton was inexperienced and yet went on to become the best President of our time (of my time, at least - 5 decades or so).
Dead wrong. Ike, Nixon, JFK, and Reagan all kicked his butt, likewise Truman.
I'm glad you agree.
Not on the words you tried to put into my mouth. Try not to be dishonest, alright?

What I will agree with is that Bill Clinton was smart enough to grow in to the job, and he did. That is to his credit. Also, Palin isn't running for president, she's to be the Veep. The crack up above about her being in the same class as Dan Quayle strikes me as apropos.

Me, I think Romney a better choice tactically and politically, but nobody asked me.

IMO, the GOP is tossing McCain under the bus, as they did Dole in 1996. Palin is merely a parsley garnish on the roadkill.
I think you'll also agree that Clinton's decade of being governor and multiple re-elections trumps Palin's less than two years and only one election.
Ross Perot was right about Bill Clinton. You are in fanboi mode, to which I'll leave you.

Thank you for telling me why I am disgusted. I just love that.

I had (and have) the means to stay at home with my kids and thank the FSM, the health insurance to pay for my second son's endless medical bills. I am disgusted with Gov. Palin (and my friends echo the sentiment) because rushing back to work three days after the kid is born shows more concern for one's job than one's child. Not one of my friends, even the two friends who work full-time went back to work three days later. Even the one who never really wanted to be a mom took off more time than that. Perhaps when you are on your fifth kid, you just don't give a damn anymore.
