Roseanne Barr off the air

Was there anything in particular that prompted her to go after Valerie Jarrett? Seems like an odd target.

How much Ambien can one take before it kicks in?
For some folks (like me) when Ambien kicks in is the problem. I did some crazy stuff and then didn't remember it. Generally, I would act out on whatever I was focused on when the Ambien kicked in. VERY unedited. I never did or said anything that wasn't a more intense version of my thoughts.

IF that's what happened to Rosanne, it's a tough break. But, even under Ambien, it's still her.

Why was Barr having an Internet slapfight with Jarrett in the first place?
Who knows... racists are not known to really need a reason to start a fight (especially with someone who isn't the 'right' colour)

Also, am I the only one wondering what an ideological marriage between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes would look like?
Yes

ABC should bring back the show for next season. New premise: The family tries to adjust to life without their matriarch who is serving life in prison after intentionally running down a minority person.

Given Barr's predilection for any and all conspiracy theories, I think a Pizzagate-esque reason for going to jail would be more fitting.

Of course, she also has had a tendency to retweet a lot of similarly bizarre racist stuff.

No, she is not racist because of Ambien. Ambien may have just unhinged her so she would let it show

Exactly! I wondered just how long it would take for Ms. Barr to invoke a chemical excuse for her behavior. It actually took longer than I thought. She probably had to think it through: Blaming being drunk just doesn't work any more. Nor does being high on cocaine. But blaming a prescription drug for making you do something abhorrent has a nicer ring to it and has been used by other celebrities in the past. So she went with that one.

Frankly I question whether Roseanne was taking Ambien at all, rather than being drunk or just being her unmedicated nasty stupid self. But as you note, if she was taking Ambien then it may have played some role by lowering her inhibitions and reducing her judgement. As does alcohol. But neither Ambien nor alcohol make you into something you are not. They do not make someone a racist- they only can make it more likely that the racist will share their real feelings with others. Given Ms. Barr's long prior history of tweets and other public statements, there is no question that her most recent tweets once again only revealed her true obnoxious self. And that her "inhibitions" against insulting and belittling other people while propagating insane conspiracy theories are extraordinarily low even at the best of times.

If she is stupid enough to believe outlandish conspiracy theories then she could also be stupid enough to have thought that Jarrett was white.

I've lived with the love of my life for 15 years now and we've been married for 12 of those years. She suffers from a medium-to-severe disorder (she's bipolar). For the past years, in part thanks to having found a very good psychiatrist... finally (by that time), she's not had too severe down's (or up's) or the very problematic trimmings thereof.

On and off in the past though, she did. In her case however, she might've said something like that if she wasn't medicated and while being in a state of anxienty-loaded psychosis. I don't think I need to say more about what a person on such a state, through no other character-flaw than having a horrible ailment that spooks about at times, can say or do. Most/some of you can probably imagine, or even relate?

I am also confident, by now, to be able to determine what is her own views and sentiments and what might be caused by synaptic-transmitter chaos.

As for Roseanne though, hell if I know, I kind of doubt I could apply the same understanding to her behaviour, as she seems far too successful career'wise through competent, able and 'clear' enough purpose. I might be wrong, though I don't think these cases are comparable. I mainly wanted to explain that a disorder can and often will take shapes that might hurt... in particular concerning political correctness or lack of it.

I'm just thankful my wife was not more publically known than she was, and she is as well.

Well, Mel Gibson tried that as a defense once, didn't he?

I think he's a bit racist at heart (a bit more than some, a bit less than others), and I think he knows it as well. While a good actor and a gifted director, as a person he comes across in interviews etc as conflicted and disordered with views which appear more or less like classic US-Catholic conservatism (almost as bad as Kevin Sorbo's).

The difference with Roseanne is that she had the means to get the absolute best treatment for anything that ails her...and she's obviously lying. Even if one was likely to accept her Ambien excuse, if true, she would have offered it immediately instead of only offering it after the full scope of actions against her began to be clear.

Naa it was just mental illness that led him to think that the jews started all the wars in history. And the domestic violence too he should get a pass on that.

I do think you probably have the right idea about her. I just know, had I not been moderating our computers at home back in the day (which I didn't always do successfully), and had my wife been more famous, you probably wouldn't hear any excuses (or responses) for about a week (at least) until she settled and had not let the sense of shame overtake her too severely.

Though, like I said, I don't see Roseanne struggling with an ailment of this severity. I also happen to strongly disapprove of snowflakes clinging to whatever pop-cultural ailment is in flavour and use as an excuse for simply being a rude, distasteful arsenhöle (or dumbsky)... to the extent that it might happen, anyway.
