Roseanne Barr off the air

I do feel sorry for the rest of the cast and crew. How awful to have the success of your own efforts and professionalism so closely tied to the actions of such a loose canon as Barr.

Indeed. It was curiously self-destructive. Her own co-stars condemned her before the network had responded.

Actually, she'll be fine (and with any luck John Goodman in particular will move on to more roles that use his talent) - it's the folks doing catering, the cameramen, etc. that'll be hit hard.

That's kinda how this style of bigotry works - just as long as the bigot feels superior, s/he'll gladly pull the roof down on everyone s/he supposedly cares about.

Which is why I wonder why anyone is shocked by her latest white supremacist outbursts (and I mean both the naked racism, and the thinly-veiled Soros anti-semitism that some folks are overlooking).

With all the prior examples out there, I am still surprised when someone nonetheless mindlessly dashes off a tweet that is likely to severely damage their image and/or career. Same thing is true of Youtube videos. Perhaps I can understand this type of stupidity from a 16 year old who thinks it's great to tweet about themselves spitting into the french fries at the restaurant at which they work. Or even a dumb 19 year old who thinks that a racist video of a blackface party at their fraternity would be perfect to upload to youtube. But a rich celebrity who already has many years of experience in the industry, with audences, and in public relations? Wouldn't they make certain that they could only tweet through their publicity agent to ensure that it helps rather than hurts their career? They shouldn't even have their own account or allow themselves direct access so as to prevent tweeting while drunk, etc (which is what I suspect happened here).

I never tweet but if I am tempted to write an angry email I may compose it when I am angry, but I always hold off sending it until the next day. By then I usually edit it to be much more calm, polite and appropriate.

In Roseanne's defense this isn't the first time she's done this but in 2013 she was unemployed.

Good, that show was horrible. I had the misfortune of being exposed to it for a few minutes and they inexplicably had two kids (one black and one "transvestite") running around as human props.

I know of a number of people, "liberals" by all definitions, who genuinely enjoyed the initial episode(s) of the revamped Rosanne series even though they were not thrilled by the pro-Trump theme. However when they tuned into the subsequent episodes they were strongly disappointed by the subsequent loss of quality and cleverness. The jokes and situations were stale and formulaic: it had become just another sitcom. So they tuned out. Barr's self-inflicted wound only helped speed the ultimate outcome.

Once upon a time, Barr was a frothing, unhinged, CT-loving leftie. When dim bulbs like Barr pull a political 180, it no longer surprises me. (e.g. David Horowitz)

Yep. I have nothing good to say about Barr herself, but really, all she had to do was keep her racism and conspiracy theories to herself. The fact that she couldn't even manage to not write it up on Twitter, even after landing a big show, has managed to harm the people who worked on that show.

Having said that, I'm not sure why anyone is acting shocked.

*Is* anyone acting shocked?

Sykes quit due to the tweets, not before, apparently.

Well, that answers my question.

It was doing VERY Well, toping the ratings in various measures, and it had been renewed.

ABC had been quite happy with the show (even with Rosanne's past history and the on-air display of her character being a Trump supporter.)

What a difference a month makes.

Exactly. Heard that watching the fake news on CNN this morning.

Yes, I am familiar with Sykes (mostly from her acting and her voice work.) Early reports listed her as "head writer"; I didn't know about her producer role on Rosanne, and reports didn't provide that information until later.
The top writers on American TV shows usually get producing credits, from the lowest level title/salary bump of consulting producer to the highest level of executive producer. The latter is usually reserved for creators but also awarded to the "showrunner(s)" (who usually also write) if the creator(s) don't fill that role.

Has any of the cast other than Goodman had much in the way of a career?

Producer Whitney Cummings left earlier in May because she was too busy with other projects, according to a few internet sources.

Sykes and Jarrett are close friends, so Barr had to know the tweet would cause big trouble.

With wealth comes the opportunity to hire people to save one's self from one's own human frailties - but many do not. Probably due to ego. Roseanne should have had multiple staff to prevent herself from doing this. Similarly I've thought that anyone coming into a wad of big money (winning the lottery or signing a multi-million dollar singing or football contract) should immediately contact the most established and safe financial company available, hand them all the money, and tell them "Hang on to this for me. Invest it conservatively. Give me only a yearly allowance that will not hurt the principle. Make certain I have enough to live on pleasantly after there is no more coming in. No matter how much I plead with you do not, do not, let me do anything stupid with the money." And then I would hire an independent CPA and lawyer to keep the investing company honest. Yet how many times do people in real life burn through this kind of money and end up broke within 5 or 10 years?

But then again "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain..."

I imagine she's spent the past couple of years feeling pretty conflicted and confused. On the one hand, not wanting to be associated with Roseanne Barr. On the other hand, wanting to be associated with Roseanne Barr so much that she signs on as the head writer for Roseanne Barr's TV show. Probably she views this tweetstorm with relief, the perfect opportunity to make a graceful exit from Roseanne Barr's money.

yeah, Sykes is the real bad guy here.

Its nice when people make their ... biases ... so obvious.

Doubtful.

According to CNN this morning, the issue wasn't so much the Tweet as sponsors had already been pulling out of season 2 (writing on the wall despite the audience of the first show), but not only that, some of the cast members didn't want stay, didn't want to be associated with the show.

Wanda Sykes quit as a writer and Sara Gilbert was tweeting apologies on behalf of the cast and crew.

Sarah Chalke has done quite well.
In addition to her:
- Lauri Metcalf (Recently nominated for an academy award for Lady Bird)
- John Galecki (staring roll in Big Bang Theory, one of the most successful sitcoms on today)
- Sara Gilbert (in addition to several apparances on Big Bang theory, also is involved in a fairly successful TV show called The Talk, although its not one I've seen)

None may be as notable as Goodman but they've been fairly successful.
