How come it was legal when Reagan did it? Is it because he's a Republican? Or is there some other, darker reason?
I can't tell if this is a race joke

Indeed. Why can't they:
Pass a DHS only budget. That shows they are willing to work with the Dems (even though they shouldn't get any credit for passing a simple funding bill, which they agree with)
Pass the anti-immigration thing separately let Obama veto it. They can then claim he isn't working with them.
Why are the so *********** stupid. Don't they know they make conservative skeptics look like tools when they blindly support whatever they do.
I'm curious.
Why must the GOP have to work with Dems when the Dems didn't work with the GOP at all when they had both majorities?
Gee, that's not how I remember it at all. In fact, I remember Obama trying to work with the Republicans for many years before he realized that was not what the Republican Party wanted. To the point it really frustrated me. How do you think Obamacare came to rely on private insurers to the extent it did?
I find it interesting people, and the president, said, "Well, the Republicans, if they'd just do something, I wouldn't have to act unilaterally. DO SOMETHING SO I DON'T HAVE TO!"
And now they do, but we don't want it so continue presidential actions.
They are all ********.
The correct answer is Julian Simon's theory says in an economically free country, the more the merrier.
LET THEM IN HAND OVER FIST.
I am on a phone so bold is harder to do than caps sorry charlie.
I think the outrage of Iron Man and some of the others isn't an outrage at not funding homeland security as much as it is a Pavlovian reaction to the leftist meme call-to-arms o' the week.
I wonder if brain mapping of someone with a true concern over that is distinguishable from someone outraging as a cog activated by their party feelorama.
Ah well, work is over. And now, dinner and beer at a bar.

I'm with you, the only part I understand was dinner and beer at the bar.
one thing worth noting is that they dont even need the immigration action in the bill. The Texas court already put a halt to the implementation rendering the condition to overturn it in the bill moot anyway, or at least unnecessary... why hold hostage an action that is at a standstill already? The Republican plan to overturn President Obama's executive actions on immigration was to attach legislation overturning those actions on a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security. To the surprise of no one with a brain, this plan failed. After passing in the House, the bill was filibustered in the Senate.
Republicans will blame Democrats for this situation and vice versa, but the fact of the matter is that after screaming about the supposed unconstitutionality of Obama's actions, Republicans are now faced with the choice of either allowing them to stand by passing a clean funding bill or shutting down Homeland Security.
As Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), said, this is a “a self-inflicted political wound for Republicans."

Nit a fan of obamas executive action myself but putting this into the DHS funding was silly to begin with, and right now, even moreso because they technicslly have what they want already
I understood some of the motivation, even if I disliked it, when there was a Democratic majority in Congress and the Republicans were spending most of their time in political theater trying to embarrass the other party, even when it meant repeatedly staging completely meaningless votes.
But now the Republicans have majorities in both houses of Congress, and they are still using their votes not to enact actual legislation, but primarily to make meaningless political statements.
I am certain that some will say that the current Republican goal is to stage theatrical votes to embarrass the remaining Democrats so as to aid the Republicans taking over the Presidency in two years. But I see no evidence that they will ever stop. The goal is not to pass serious legislation, but to make political statements as advertising (to ensure their own re-elections and to obtain campaign money from wealthy individuals).
Of course, one might interpret that Homeland Security/Immigration bill linkage as a "real" attempt to force Obama to back down from his immigration policy. In which case, the Republicans who invented this idea could defend themselves as just stupid and incompetent, rather than as conniving.
So John Boehner, to the surprise of no one, has caved and will allow a vote on a clean funding bill. Assuming it passes, it will be probably be with mostly Dem votes.

I think he was waiting for the Nehatyhu speech,to give him cover.
I agree it was wrong to put it the bill, not with whether the immigration action was legal. It was just wrong period to tie it in as a contingency to national security, which makes the move bone headed, but then yes, so are democrats... with the immigration bill. Republicans are just dumb for trying to hold it hostage when they no longer need it as a priority, and it was a silly idea beforeBecause they are worried it won't stand up. And it shouldn't. The Roberts Supreme Court has already ruled that there is wide discretion with regards to deportations.

If theres a govt shutdown over this still they will be rightly blamed no matter how guilty obama is of playing politics here
