Rename the human species!

Another self loathing, modern civilization hating, misanthrope whining for attention.

It's amazing that so many people actually have an emotional disorder from being the pinnacle of creation.

You certainly read a lot into something that looks to me like, "Wisdom isn't the defining feature of humanity, let's have some fun thinking of interesting new names that we could give our species."

To say "wise man" doesn't fit modern humans is quite an understatement. And maybe a bit of hyperbole.

Sure humans are easily led, but we have the capability of aquiring facts about the world around us in a way that no other animal can.

Wise man. Yes we are.

Acquiring facts and wisdom are not synonymous.

Maybe not. But it doesn't take away the fact that we are the most intelligent and capably rational species that ever lived.....

Megistotherium (biggest beast) wasn't even the biggest mammal but the name is relevant among predatory mammals. At least we got humans right....... ;)

The Science Show on ABC (that's Australia mind), had a segment recently asking for new names for humanity, given that he thinks "wise man" is not an appropriate moniker.

Zoological names are meant to be specific rather than appropriate, but for the sake of argument, how about (with apologies to anyone who actually knows Latin out there) Homo Urbis; "City-dwelling man"?

That's what I meant with Orangkota (man of the city, if I'm correct), as opposed to Orangutan (man of the forest).

The trick is to think of something that is different from other primates. Like exclusive bipedalism, using tools to make tools, to believe in ********, our thumbs?
Either that, or think of something funny.

I vote for Jihad Jane's name, "Biggus Dickus" that one would work well.

So say we throw out the sapiens, at least, what would you give as a descriptor for our species?

(It would be interesting to find out if there was an actual alternative name which had priority if sapiens really had to be discarded under the rules of nomenclature.)

Pan Sapiens. Fix Linnaeus' baseless capitulation to the moralists of his day.

With similar apologies:

Homo Carbonis Exustio

I agree.
