The Science Show on ABC (that's Australia mind), had a segment recently asking for new names for humanity, given that he thinks "wise man" is not an appropriate moniker.

So say we throw out the sapiens, at least, what would you give as a descriptor for our species?

(It would be interesting to find out if there was an actual alternative name which had priority if sapiens really had to be discarded under the rules of nomenclature.)

I recall a Latinized "Storytelling Ape", maybe Sagan's suggestion?

ETA found it. Pans Narrans.

Considering that most species name are dog-latin anyway, and serve just to have a unique name, rather than make any sense... why do we need a new name anyway? It's not like "sapiens" will cause more confusion than such utter nonsense as, say, "Watcheeria" (named for the town of What Cheer in Iowa), "Casineria" (a dog-latin rendering of Cheese Bay), or Eldeceeon (named after the LDC=Livingston Development Corporation). Or than some half-Greek/half-Latin constructs.

Why?

I'm pretty sure there isn't. That's why Neanderthal still has the h, and Basilisaurus and Hyracotherium still are named that despite the former not being a marine reptile or the latter not being a hyrax.

That said, how about Homo pandemos? It's a bit axoimatic, but applicable.

Spheniscus panoides

Another self loathing, modern civilization hating, misanthrope whining for attention.

It's amazing that so many people actually have an emotional disorder from being the pinnacle of creation.
