Cont: Qanon Conspiracy Theories Part Two

Some pests are difficult to eradicate.

The end of QAnon: U.S. Democracy still isn't safe [salon.com]
From the Republican Party's efforts to rig future elections to General Michael Flynn calling for the violent overthrow of the American government to billionaire-owned or -subsidized media operations openly supporting oligarchy and ridiculing efforts to make a more pluralistic, egalitarian society, the forces that seek to destroy democracy are on the move.
Qanon believers are now convinced that Donald Trump will return to his throne in the White House this August. Many have sworn to do everything they can to bring that about, making anything from another January 6th to mass murder like Tim McVeigh did possible.

In slightly more well hidden form... it might also be worth questioning the firm support of QAnons, a group that makes much ado about "saving" children, for the people who are actively trying to make it much easier for pedophiles to "inspect" children's genitals.

It reminds me of attempting to interpret Nostradamus.
If you squint, tilt your head, drink several shots of strong alcohol, and then strike yourself in the head several times with a baseball bat, you could claim that a recent event has some slight resemblance to an extremely vague statement someone made in the past.

You have to understand that QAnon is a Christian conspiracy theory now. Of course if the Cicada would've landed on Trump it would've been the exact same thing. As with all things religious the theory is whatever is convenient at the moment.

I was astounded to learn that something like a quarter of all Mormons now believe in QAnon. To their credit I had always considered them smarter than that as a group. Our local journalists attribute it to a higher than normal ingestion of right-wing media, but I don't have the wherewithal to know how true that might be. This was addressed in the church's April conference, where church leaders warned members to seek information from only wholesome and reliable sources. But in the particular rhetoric that Mormon preaching uses, it's never going to be more specific than vague descriptions. They're never going to come right out and say, "Don't believe Newsmax." So for the foreseeable future I'm convinced now that many Mormons will consider right-wing media to be "wholesome and reliable."

In a certain sense the Mormon leadership made that bed and now they're going to have to lay it in. The last Democrat candidate for President who carried Utah was Lyndon B. Johnson. Since then the Mormon church has indirectly sided quite exclusively with Republicans. The socially conservative platform aligns well with Mormon interests. The church's official position is that good candidates can be found in both major parties, but that's always been followed by a sort of wink-wink, nudge-nudge. Now that the Republican Party has simply become the party of farfetched conspiracy theory and propaganda, Mormon leaders have the unenviable task of trying to wean their membership off of a generation or two of, "God is a Republican."

In the larger religious sense, I can see how the QAnon claims would appeal to people who have been taught that Satan is always nipping at their heels and will turn in up all sorts of places. Fire and brimstone preachers have only to identify something as "Satanic" (regardless of the evidence) to galvanize their followers.

On behalf of the CIA I'll point out that the Agency has "patriotic" Americans risking their lives around the world in just about every country, friend or foe, to collect intelligence for the United States government. Trump and his b*tt-kissing troglodytes refused to take the daily CIA morning briefings, and coopted the Agency for personal financial gain.

You are part of the Anti-American machine.

Also, Q was never anything more than an 8-Chan prank to fool the growing gullibility of right-wing supporters. You weren't fooled by CIA specialists, you were fooled by Red Bull-drinking computer nerds.

In short, you were had by "snowflakes".

Well said. :bigclap

I'll worry when they pick a date and start planning another gathering.

They have forgotten one of the rules of ' fringe prediction' NEVER make a firm statement that cannot be changed or delayed, and cannot be checked. You need to be vague. Like the Christian "Jesus coming soon' not 2:10 on October 3rd at the Dairy Queen outside of Pittsburgh.

Deniability!!

They believe the clearly ridiculous nonsense from Joseph Smith. It doesn’t bode well for critical thinking. In fact if anything it indicates that they are more susceptible to a con man making up stories about the way the world works and coming up with vague predictions.

While one might expect that to be true, it seems often not to be. William Miller, the founder of the Seventh-Day Adventists, made a very specific prediction that the world would end on the 24th of March, 1843. As you may have noticed, it seems not to have, but there are still plenty of Seventh Day Adventists.

The Jehovah's Witnesses have made a couple of pretty specific predictions of the same sort, as have other evangelists. To all outward appearances, it appears likely that the world has not actually ended. And yet, they continue to preach.

The ability of prophets to reset is quite phenomenal.

A favorite comedy routine from long ago....

Yes shifting the goal posts and the firm belief of the fervent believers is a given but for the larger audience the failure of predictions reduces the appeal significantly.

The trumpers should be saying he will be reinstated soon, then they can never be wrong and maybe nine months after he dies they will finally admit he isn't going to actually do that - until he is resurrected!

Thanks for the link I remember that one - great!

It is worse. After the first fiasco, there were a whole string of subsequent failures. So bad that these days they refuse any and all specific dates.

One might think that such a truck of fail would be a death knell for such a so called faith, but it isn't. Plenty of SDA still about, still doorstepping people.
