Presidential Primaries 2012

Gee, really? C. Christie is really giving it a 2nd look, according to "people close to him?" I don't know. Smells like smoke up our patooties. In any case, I'll spice things up around here by un-striking this month's flavor.

As long as I'm here, I'll strike through A. Keyes. He ain't running for squat.

There's been a distinct lack of action on the 3rd party front this cycle, and now we have a possible contender. Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks Corporation, was ringing the Third Way bell on ABC this morning. It's good to have new blood.

I didn't want to trash him for his rotundity, and I won't. But, I noticed a shot of him on the tube the other night that had him walking somewhere without a jacket. He's a pear-shaped big boy, and he wears his trousers way up over his equator. I hate to say it, but he looks like funny ... like he's wearing a big barrel or something. I don't think Americans are going to be able to take him seriously when they see him in that costume.

ETA: Here's a pic http://www.nydailynews.com/news/pol...of_gop_field__and_president_obama__in_th.html

When you are that big, there is no way to not look silly without a jacket.

Interesting. I seems that the Rick Perry boom has already gone bust. The latest national poll by Fox News also shows Romney back in the frontrunner position.

RCP, PollingReport.com

Perry still leads in the RCP average of the last 4 polls, but not the most recent one.

Let's see what's happened over at Intrade since the last time:
Romney: 45.1% +8.1%
Perry: 27.0% -8.8%
Christie: 8.7% +7.3%
Palin: 7.4% +1.4%
Huntsman: 4.4% -3.1%
Paul: 2.9% unchanged
Bachmann: 2.0% -0.9%

Romney: 47.5% +2.4%
Perry: 18.4% -8.6%
Christie: 10.5% +2.1%
Cain: 5.3% +5.0%
Palin: 4.0% -3.4%
Huntsman: 3.9% -0.5%
Paul: 2.5% -0.4%

The big up mover this week is Herman Cain (I don't believe it will last long). People still seem to think that Christie might run. And the big down mover is Rick Perry. (Bachmann has completely fallen of the radar. She's in 9th place after Gingrich at this point).

Has the last, best hope of the someone-elsers just bowed out? Will they come home at last to M. Romney, or will they continue to cast about for someone else? There's still one R. Giuliani floated around out there. Time to revive M. Daniels? M. Pence?

In any case, farewell yet again to C. Christie.

And as I predicted, Perry's entry bounce has ended, and he is now trailing Romney in the polls.

If I were a republican I'd be scared to be in this race, to be honest. And not because of anything to do with Obama.

They seem to be clamoring for new candidates constantly. As soon as one throws his hat in he/she is the immediate front runner. Two weeks after that they're detested and thrown on the pile with Santorum (and that's a messy pile).

The candidates are christian, that much we know. But it seems the 24 hour news cycle is one hungry lion...

Oops. Forgot to actually strike C. Christie last time.

In 3 recent polls, Cain has 17% support. He's ahead of Perry in one, tied with him in another and just slightly behind in a third. It looks like most of Cain's support is coming from disillusioned Perry supporters, as other candidates' numbers haven't changed very much, but Cain's rise seems roughly equal to Perry's fall.

Again, I do not expect this renewed interest in Cain to last very long. He has significant liabilities as a candidate.

Stunning. I have whiplash. H. Cain? That dude is as nutty as M. Bachmann. Where next, before they all (mostly) hold their nose and come home to Romney?

I think a significant number of Republicans may be suffering from ABM (Anybody but Mitt) in the short term. It will be interesting to see if eventually ABO (Anybody but Obama) will overcame resentment of Mitt getting the nomination (if and when that happens).

Ouch.

Also, I like the color they used for Santorum.

Big night, and a long time coming. S. Palin, the most intriguing and disturbing political figure in recent American history, has run up against the closing calendar for entry into this race, and finally announced what we've all known for at least a year: she ain't running.

Speaking of closing opportunities, I'm going to throw a strike through R. Giuliani too. Of course he was never serious about running, but just using this thing to get his reprehensible visage onto the TV once in a while.

Let's see what's happened over at Intrade since the last time:

Romney: 47.5% +2.4%
Perry: 18.4% -8.6%
Christie: 10.5% +2.1%
Cain: 5.3% +5.0%
Palin: 4.0% -3.4%
Huntsman: 3.9% -0.5%
Paul: 2.5% -0.4%

Well, now we can see how the numbers change with Christie and Palin finally out of the race:

Romney: 59.0% +11.5%
Perry: 19.8% +1.4%
Cain: 8.2% +2.9%
Huntsman: 3.7% -0.2%
Paul: 2.4% -0.1%

So the punters at least are finally coming home to Romney.

I think we can finally say that the field is set, and all the mentionable candidates who are getting in are already in.

So how many of Caribou Barbie's followers will now shift to the nearest bat-crap-crazy. Seems to me that they only one she was really competing with on an equal footing was Bachmann.

She never had a lot of positive support and there was very large negative support. Most Republicans did not want her in the race.

A supporter of Rick Perry has caused an uproar by attacking Romney's religion at the so-called "Values Voters Summit."

Mitt Romney's Mormon issue returns

The Values Voter Summit in Washington this weekend left no doubt about it: The Mormon issue is back.

A Texas pastor’s inflammatory remarks here — calling Mormonism a “cult” — thrust Mitt Romney’s faith into the center of a 2012 campaign overwhelmingly focused on the economy. It was a transparent attempt by Baptist minister Robert Jeffress, a Rick Perry supporter, to drive a wedge between Romney and evangelical voters.

The attack amounted to a test for Romney, forcing him to respond to a rhetorical assault on his faith that flouted the standard rules of American political debate.

It turns out that this pastor Jeffress was approved by Rick Perry's campaign to introduce him at the conference, although they are now trying to distance themselves from his remarks.

Rick Perry's campaign signed off on the choice of Texas pastor Robert Jeffress to introduce the governor at the Values Voter Summit, Family Research Council head Tony Perkins told POLITICO.

And while we're on the subject of religion, here's a recent interview with one of the religious leaders who helped organize Rick Perry's prayer rally. He has some, uh . . . interesting ideas about reality. Here's the "viral" Youtube video mentioned in the interview:
