Presidential Primaries 2012

...I don't know you so I'm going to assume you're joking.
Because otherwise, I might have to say something like "nice situational morals, jackass."
Glad I don't.

The pile-on on Newt continues. Rush Limbaugh and Rich Lowry.

Lowry points out to anyone who thought that Newt stands for anything other than pork-barrel government as usual:
That’s Newt being Newt. When he went to Iowa and predictably plugged ethanol subsidies, he inveighed against “folks in big cities” who “decide what should happen to people in rural America.” Every candidate in Iowa endorses ethanol. Only Gingrich makes it a grand sociological clash between different regions of the country.

He can’t help himself. Gingrich prefers extravagant lambasting when a mere distancing would do, and the over-arching theoretical construct to a mundane pander.

Alas, the short-lived hopeful talk about R. Perry. I think he anticipates assuming the presidency of the Republic of Texas at some point in the future. Strike him!

Herman Cain refuses to say anything about national security, even in generalities, until after he's elected.

GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain said Sunday he doesn’t have a plan for the war on terror and won’t share his thoughts with voters until he gets into the White House.

“The right approach is that the day I’m elected, I would start on that plan,” he told “Fox Sunday News.”

Mr. Cain, former Godfather’s Pizza CEO, said he can’t make those decisions until he sees intelligence files that he is not privy to at this point.

Are voters going to put a guy in office who won't even hint about what his national security approach might be?

Yes, yet another Great Sane Hope stays on the sidelines. So strike to M. Daniels.

I'll do a little house-keeping in this post by striking a few erstwhile mentionables whose buzz, such as it was, has gone permanently moribund: T. Ridge, J. DeMint, G. Pataki, S. Brownback.

R. Giuliani news -- I don't know whether to believe it, since the source is a known liar (Peter King), but it appears that Bizarro-America's Mayor is really, seriously ramping up for a prez run. He'll throw all his chips into beating W. "M." Romney in New Hampshire (Iowa, fuggetaboutit), etc.

Favorite quote:
Giuliani ran a poor race in 2008 and King said some of the blame goes to all the strategists the former mayor hired. "They were keeping Rudy from being Rudy," said King. He said one of the political selling points Giuliani has going for him is that "you're a son of a bitch" when it comes to fighting crime, reforming welfare, and cutting taxes.

Oh, sure. He wasn't enough of a son of a bitch last time. You didn't get the real thing, just the phony-baloney running-for-prez model. Listen, the worst thing about R. Giuliani's run in 2008 was that he was the candidate for his campaign. He has an execrable personality, and the more voters get to know him, the less they like him, inevitably.

Please, please run. The announcement of the R. Giuliani campaign, if it happens, will probably be my favorite moment of the 2011 political year, even more than the N. Gingrich train-wreck.

Well, well. R. Perry: in, out, in? He's now making noises that he's thinking about it. He'll be unstruck for now, and we'll watch with interest.

In another piece of business, M. Bachmann has announced that she'll hold and event in Waterloo, Iowa in June to announce her intentions. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and upgrade her to a solid dot. Don't think she'll put on a rally to announce she's sitting it out.

Now... S. Palin? Movie about her ("Undefeated") to premier in Iowa. National "bus tour," not connected to a book signing. What's her game? I still don't think that she'll run, or R. Ailes would have suspected her TV career already. To that point, I'm going to go ahead and strike through J. Bolton, since he's a born also-ran.

Why do they keep this guy hidden? Why does Roy Moore, chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court before being removed because of violating a Federal Court order to remove a 10 commandments monument from the grounds, have to be kept under wraps? He's been running for a month, and I'm just finding out about it today. What? Enough religious nuts in the field already? I say no! Bring me R. Moore, and the more the better.

A bit of housekeeping: With M. Bachmann in the race, I'm going to assume that the S. King balloonlet will never re-inflate, so strikes to him.

Yeah OK, look here. R. Moore is a long-time politician of previous national notoriety. These others are random jokers. There're probably another hundred out there of similar quality, who haven't been added to this particular list.

I do like Ms. Rusher's succinct description of herself:
Becky is a computer technician an internet addict and all around good person.
Now, that's a candidate I can relate to.

I see Romney has made it all official-like today, not that there was a whole lot of doubt (already had a dot). Finally a candidate I actually could see myself voting for. We'll see how the campaign goes, but a possibly Romney presidency at least doesn't strike me as crazy.
