Presidential Primaries 2012

Things are really fluid with the list these days! Not only did R. Perry move from a no-thanks to a let's-see, but so now has J. DeMint, our newest unstruck.

Small story with fun snippets:
"... frustrated conservative activists have pleaded with him to run."
"... will pray on the question out of respect for his supporters across the country."

He's reading from the pg 1 of the religious nut playbook.

I still think Becky Rusher should be on your list. She could be symbolic of all the fringe characters who "run" for president. But then again you already listed Donald Trump.

She really understands our economic problems:
Becky Rusher knows that the problem with budgets is sometimes you have to give money now to later lower your money output.

She is a treasure. Here's more:
[Becky] believes everyone is their own person and has valid ideas and those ideas should be put out there in the world. Whether by blog, emails, or running for president of a country.

Alrighty then, it's time for D. Trump Redux. No, not as a Republican -- that trick has played out. But it was a big success. He got lavished with attention by a foolish contingent of believers, in the press and in the populace, and by everyone else who just likes a clown show. In the next stage, he is going to hint about an independent run. This Act in the political theater can last a lot longer, since the nearest election contest is 17 months away. He's already started the hinting. Expect to see it ramp up to just within the limits of what's allowable for a contemporaneously employed TV personality.

I'll add D. Trump as a new entry to the Indy category, and strike L. Dobbs while I'm at it.

The more I look at Huntsman the better candidate he looks. I think the GOP would be mad not to nominate him.

Bill Krystal, is having fever dreams again. He imagines he's been told by "two reliable sources" that his Great Neocon Hope, R. Giuliani, is actually going to run for president.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/rudys-running_573998.html

Money quote:
It seems implausible that Rudy Giuliani could win the nomination. But it's an implausible year.

Hilarious. I think that this year is as real as can be. And if R. Giuliani enters the fray, he will be flayed and spitted.

If Kristol says it, you can be pretty sure it's wrong.

On another note, it looks like Gingrich staffers are jumping ship.

I thought it was so significant, that I started a whole thread just for that.

So the first proper GOP debate gets going tomorrow:

The line up will be:
Mitt Romney,
T-Paw,
Gingrich,
Santorum,
businessman Herman Cain,
Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.)
Ron Paul (Tex.)

Bachmann's own campaign manager had this to say about her before she hired him:

After praising Obama's speech and the GOP's official rebuttal, given by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Rollins dismissed Bachmann's poorly produced "tea party response." In doing so, Rollins questioned Bachmann's role as a credible Republican leader. Moreover, he suggested Bachmann ought not be representing the Republican Party.

"Michele Bachmann obviously is a member of Congress and a representative of the tea party," Rollins told CNN viewers. "But at the end of the day, we have to get our serious players out front and talking about the things that matter to be the alternative to the president and Democrats." In other words, he did not consider Bachmann a "serious" GOP player. (Just this week, Rollins bashed another tea party leader, Sarah Palin, as someone who "has not been serious over the last couple of years.")

More recently, Rollins dismissed Bachmann's chances in the 2012 presidential race. In April, weeks after Bachmann revealed her plan to form a presidential exploratory committee, Rollins appeared on MSNBC's Hardball and offered his two cents about what kind of politician would win the GOP nomination:

At the end of the day, you know, we're going to have a candidate who has been a governor, I assume. There's no Washingtonians in this mix. It ain't going to be Donald Trump. I don't think it's going to be Congresswoman Bachmann.

Asked by Mother Jones to explain his recent criticism and dismissal of Bachmann, Rollins quipped in an email, "That was before she hired me!

Current predictions by Intrade:

Romney: 30.5%
Pawlenty: 16.6%
Huntsman: 13.4%
Perry: 13.3% (pretty good for a guy who isn't even in the race)
Bachmann: 5.4%
Palin: 5.4%
Cain:4.6% (clueless answers to basic questions means his 15 minutes are up.)

If I had money to spend at Intrade, I think that Romney and Pawlenty are are pretty good buys at those prices. Huntsman and Perry are conceivable, but I wouldn't pay so much for a guy who might not even run.

There's no need to update the tabs, since M. Bachmann earned her solid dot long ago, but she did make a splash in the debate last night by announcing that she had filed papers that morning for her official campaign.

Next up: I expect that J. Huntsman will make his decision known in about a week from now. And, I think he's a go.

Looks like I was precisely correct. J. Huntsman will announce his candidacy one week from today. But that pre-announcement earns a solid dot today.

Next up -- the R. Perry bubble floats or pops. And -- will R. Giuliani arrive to provide comic delights after N. Gingrich fades into ignominy.

He provides "comic" relief only if you have a rather more grotesque sense of humor than mine.

Rotten Rudy may be too busy making money of the motivational speaking tour. He was part of a big rah-rah extravaganza in my neck of the woods along with Colin Powell, Bill Cosby, Dan Rather, Laura Bush and some jock or two whose names escape me right now.
And for a month, I had to see that ghastly face five feet tall on a billboard neara turn in the road on my way home. I do not think it helps much that he is getting uglier at a rate greater than his additional years would demand. On top of his sorry moral character, I cannot see his being anythng more than an anomoly. Then again, that party has nominated some fugly lunatics in the past.

Oh, I'm sure that no one, including R. Giuliani himself, believes that he could get the nomination. He's just floating the absurd rumor because he saw what a big success a fakey campaign was for D. Trump, being noticed-wise.

After the first debate:

Romney: 32.3% +1.8%
Pawlenty: 14.9% -1.7%
Huntsman: 13.0% -0.4%
Perry: 12.4% -0.9% (68.9% chance that he will run. Still pretty good for a guy who isn't even in the race yet)
Bachmann: 6.3% +0.9%
Palin: 5.4% unchanged
Cain:3.6% -1.0% (fading away because he's clueless)

Intrade says Romney and Bachmann are the winners. John Dickerson also thinks Romney won.

(According to applause and internet polls, Ron Paul won, but he's still only 2.3% to win the nom).
