Presidential Primaries 2012

I absolutely hate Primaries! I have to pay, out of my taxes, so that Democrats and Republicans can hold their love fest. My state's answer to my concern is that I am allowed to vote in either one of these Primaries. WTF... why would I want to vote in either one of the party's since I think they both suck? The Primaries should be financed by the parties and not the general public, this political not a public service.

Well, Mitch Daniels is out for me. He's reportedly defunding Planned Parenthood in Indiana. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20058671-503544.html?asid=b028c2d5

I had him on my short list of potential Republican candidates that I might consider voting for. But defunding Planned Parenthood at all, much less in a state where more than 60% of the clientale are at or under the poverty line doesn't fly with me.

Any idea on how today's momentous events will effect presidential aspirants who were on the fence or on the verge of declaring?

A rational candidate who has had no great deal of suoort in previuous elections would probably sit this one out.

Rational is, however, not a word that fits well on a Republicon's shoulders. They will more likely have a contest to see who can bestdistract the public with a claim that getting Osama is not that big a deal.

The lineup:

* Herman Cain, former CEO of Godfather's Pizza

* Gary Johnson, former governor of New Mexico

* Tim Pawlenty, former governor of Minnesota

* Ron Paul

* Former senator Rick Santorum (Pa.)

This probably won't require any dots yet, but I thought you would be interested to know:

"Jon Huntsman forms fundraising committee as he eyes possible White House run" (LA Times, May 3, 2011)
...
Huntsman filed paperwork on Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission to form “H PAC,” a federal leadership committee, said spokesman Tim Miller.
...
“If and when he decides he wants to run for president, he’ll make an announcement that he’s going to run for president at that time,” Miller said, adding that a decision is likely by early summer.

Meanwhile, one of the writers at Salon compared the upcoming Republican candidate debate to the one had in early 1995.

To whet your appetite, please enjoy this video of the closest precedent I can find for tonight's event: the first GOP debate of the 1996 cycle, held in New Hampshire in February 1995. The front-runner, Bob Dole, didn't show up, but ... Robert Dornan, Alan Keyes, Pat Buchanan, Arlen Specter and Lynn Martin all did. (Sorry, C-Span won't let me embed it here, but this is the link.)

That C-SPAN video link is: http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/NewHampshireR

I don't know which was cheesier, the political rhetoric or the video graphics.

Yes, J. Huntsman's filing with the FEC of this quasi-quasi-campaign apparatus deserves at least a hollow dot. I'm not going to let these folk run invisible campaigns without our notice.

All eyes now turn to M. Daniels.

A dull and baffling debate, full of lots of hammering the podium while talking about terrorism.

Discussion of the debate probably merits its own thread.

I will note right here, though, that the GOP will have to really hammer the podium when they discuss terrorism from here out after the way Obama sorted out ObL. When the GOP loses the advantage of being seen as the national defense party, they are in deep kimchi.

Right now, after the way he showed them how to deal with a terrorist leader, Obama is eating their lunch.

I will be out of pocket for a couple weeks, and will update this thread with accumulated developments upon my return.

Cheers!

Newt's in.

Meet Callista:

http://www.newt.org/meet-callista

And the catty remarks begin:
How is Callista Gingrich part of my generation?

There's a whole lot about Callista Gingrich that doesn't quite make sense. The 45-year-old third wife of 67-year-old Newt Gingrich and, as of Wednesday, aspiring first lady, is a devout Catholic who began her relationship with her husband via a lengthy extramarital affair. She's a small town girl from Wisconsin who plays the French horn in her local city band and has recently written a children's book about American "exceptionalism." But for many of us, the most baffling thing about Callista Gingrich can be summed up by the email an old friend sent me a few days ago. It asked one simple question: "This Plasticine hag is our age? THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE." The Obamas and Sarah Palins, all in their late 40s, represent very different tail ends of the "hopey changey" boomer generation. But my fellow Gen Xers: Callista, God help us, belongs to us. It's like Daria went completely to hell.

Ouch!

"And right over there is where I will dump your body if you ever cheat on me."

Well this has screwed up my predictions good. Oh well. I guess this is the logical choice though. He's making a lot of money and the election is almost a dead cert for Obama.

Well, Huckabee's declared that he's out of the race.
Yeah, I saw that. Usually, when viable candidates drop out of a race it is because of one of a few reasons. Either they have health issues, a scandal is about to break, or they are pretty sure they'd lose, and don't want that on their record. More and more it's looking like Romney is inevitable, though Michael Bloomberg could change the landscape drastically.
