Presidential Primaries 2012

Alas, J. Huntsman will leave the race without even waiting to see how little he'll score in S. Carolina. I wonder if that Ambassador to China job was held open for him.

Some time in the next week, I'll do a housekeeping update to clear out the dross of also-rans on the list -- the R. Moores and T. McCotters and the like.

Speaking of Newt's campaign--did anyone see yesterday's (Sunday's) Doonesbury? Checking Newt's baggage at airport security. . . .

Today's was a collection of Newtisms. A couple of favorites...

"People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz."

"It doesn't matter what I do. People need to hear what I have to say. It doesn't matter what I live."

Steve S

Apparently you were correct.

I predict that Perry will be dropping out pretty soon too, after South Carolina if not before.

His poll numbers in S. Carolina are dismal despite skipping New Hampshire to concentrate on S. Carolina.

ETA: This is great news for Romney I think. Huntsman's votes will probably go to Romney. Also if Rick Perry stays in until after S. Carolina, that also helps Romney because it keeps the anti-Romney vote divided.

agree on that. So far everything is going pretty much perfect for Romney.

Newt seems to me like he's totally baffled that everyone hasn't rushed to support him. He can't understand why the Republicans wouldn't want someone as smart as him.

According to CNN, Rick Perry is dropping out today.

This was looking increasing inevitable. He was heading for an embarrassingly weak showing in SC, so he maybe saves a little face by dropping out now. His poll numbers were similar to Jon Huntsman who dropped out a few days ago.

So now it's down to 4: Romney, Gingrich, Paul and Santorum. Perry would have finished well behind all of them.

South Carolina Primary Polls

One recent poll has him ahead. Perry is going to endorse Gingrich.

Just for the soap opera I do hope Gingrich does win..... :)

also apparently Romney has been stripped of his "win" in Iowa - because they can't decide for sure who got the most votes.....

it'll be interesting to see if the anti-romney attack ads re anti-tooth and claw capitalism and anti-being a rich guy who doesn't pay much tax actually get much traction amongst the republican voters - after all that's pretty much what the GOP stand for (and to be fair, the Democrats aren't too far behind...)

After gaining the Palin endorsement, Newt says she will play "a major role" in his administration. What position could she possibly be qualified to perform?

Given what a divisive character Palin is, won't this statement blow up in Newt's face? Won't independents now demand to know what "major role" Palin would play in his administration before they would even consider voting for him? What answer could Newt give that would reassure independents that she can't do any harm but wouldn't insult Palin?
