Presidential Primaries 2012

With much sadness, we see the sun set on the campaign of M. Bachmann.

Romney holds a commanding lead in NH. No one close.

Huntsman's last (only?) stand. He'll be gone in a week. Unless his plan is 2016 and just wants to keep his name out there. Doesn't have to campaign much, just get his name on the ballot.

Newt's not looking good in NH. I think he'll try to hang on til SC.

But Santorum may do well in SC with the religious right and that would be the end of Newt. So things may get interesting. Maybe Santorum's angling for VP. Romney/Santorum? Romney moves back to the center for the general election and Santorum panders to the religious right.

Then there's Ron Paul who will continue to garner enough (10-25%) in each primary to keep going but not enough to actually get many delegates. So once again the Paulsters can complain about the MSM screwing their candidate instead of realizing he just doesn't appeal to that many Republicans across the country.

N. Gingrich pretty much said last night that he intends to be R. Santorum's wing man in the W. "M." Romney destruction campaign. I interpret it as conceding and endorsing R. Santorum, without actually pulling out yet (and thus being left unstruck).

Maybe Newt should just pull out quickly. That would probably spread Santorum across the country and lead to a Romney slip.

So, R. Perry has just said that he will return to Texas to "reassess" whether to stay in the race. I think we can assume that means he's a strike.
Not so quick there, Mr. Ringmaster. Perry says he's still in the race. He won't quit until after South Carolina.

ETA: The last sentence is just my opinion.

Well, dang. R. Perry feinted toward the exit, but re-invigorates the dream. Thanks for the heads-up, Sezme.

or he's raised enough money to pay off his debts.

How about a prediction contest? I think we'll all agree that one ore more of the current Republican candidates for President will drop out of the race between Iowa and New Hampshire. Make your predictions here.

Final entries accepted midnight EST January 2. The retirement window for correct answers is a statement by the candidate or by his or her campaign in an official release between the evening of January 3 and midnight January 9.

For the winner, you'll get your reward in Heaven.

So far, it's Bachmann out. No plans to endorse. All others holding steady, except for Perry, who held shaky. Any additional predictions?

I hear ya, Ben, but Huntsman has jumped aboard the crazy train more than once in order to pander to the wingers and, in doing so, has lost a lot of my respect.

This seems as good a time as any to post the following parody. (Can one parody a real-life parody?)

With apologies to the original Disposable Heroes, here are the Disposable Heroes of GOPocracy:

Bridge:

Uneducated, underdeveloped
Undisciplined but mostly unaware
They join the flavor of the month club
They swallow the flavor of the month.

The folksy TV host
was the flavor of the month
Half a term, unlike most,
was the flavor of the month

Then stopping teh ghey
was the flavor of the month
The House Tea Lady way
was the flavor of the month

Cutting more than good-hair
was the flavor of the month
Flying high without a care
was the flavor of the month

Then nine-nine-nine
was the flavor of the month
Those ladies are fine
was the flavor of the month

Contracting future shock
was the flavor of the month
Got my Tiffany's stock
was the flavor of the month

Then the paleo gold-bug
was the flavor of the month
And a "let 'em die" shrug
was the flavor of the month

Then no right to privacy
was the flavor of the month
Down with modernity
the frothy surge of the month

Until Bill Clinton's heir
was the flavor of the month
With the funny underwear
was the flavor of the month.

Fresh for 'oh-twelve, suckas.

I think it's time for another check at Intrade.
Here's where we were on Dec 15th:
Romney: 65.0% +17.5%
Gingrich: 20.6 -17.8%
Paul: 7.9% +2.8%
Huntsman: 6.0% +1.1%
Perry: 3.0% +0.8%

And here's where we are today:

Romney: 78.7% +13.3%
Gingrich: 6.9% -13.7%
Huntsman: 4.5% -1.5%
Santorum: 4.0% +3.2%
Paul: 2.7% -5.2%
Perry: 1.5% -1.5%

Looks like nobody is being fooled by Santorum. For one thing he has no money to compete with Romney. Yes, his chances are slightly better today than they were two weeks ago, but he's still not likely to win the nomination.

Has anyone heard more about which candidates are going to be on the ballot in states other than Virginia? In Virginia, only Romney and Paul are going to be on the ballot, but I can't find information about other states.

I heard on a podcast that Rick Santorum has a big problem ahead because he simply isn't on the ballot in a lot of the states. I know that this is the case in Virginia, but I don't know which other states he's not on the ballot for. Also doesn't have the money to compete with Romney.

If the Koch brothers er, grassroots populist Tea Party movement decide the they want Santorum, then the money will show up.

Right now, Li'l Ricky hasn't been annointed yet. If the word comes from on high that the GOP needs Santorum in the end, then he'll have the money.

I heard on the tube that R. Santorum has raised $2mil since Iowa. Of course these reports are subject to great falsehoods, and can't be confirmed until April (when quarterly data is reported officially).
