Presidential Debates

The concept that Trump is the biggest liar in the known universe has been challenged in various threads. This is good opportunity to keep a tally of blatant lies told by both candidates. I bet Trump prevails.
Ms Conway's argument was propaganda at its best: First, it's not the job of the moderators to fact check. Whose rule is that?

And second calling Trump's use of superlatives a lie is an example of the media treating Trump unfairly.

The rule? It has been at the core of debates that are derived from the old Lincoln Douglas debates that were actually without a moderator and more like back to back speeches.

Why does it even need a moderator?

The Austrians went back to that format for their recent presidential election. Four months ago it looked like this (in German language, obviously). While it was a bit silly and repetitive, I don't think it would have been less silly and repetitive with a moderator, and likely one was able to learn more about them as humans in an undisturbed discussion. As this election was nullified due to irregularities (after the bearded guy had been announced as winner with tiny advantage), the two of them will soon have the opportunity to do it again.

And Kelly Crowe says it wasn't actually a lie, because he didn't know it to be false. He just made it up out of thin air, but don't call it a lie.
Did you mean Kellyanne Conway? I heard that clip; it was pretty embarrassing for her.

Have they decided on what trigger warning to use?

Maybe Lester could hold up a flag and say "Mr. Trump, we are going to be using facts to set up the next question, please be advised that some of them are counter to your long held beliefs and may be upsetting to you. Prepare accordingly."

There is an odd message in the "the moderator can't correct incorrect facts" claim:

That you don't WANT them to - that it is ok to say things factually incorrect if your opponent doesn't call you out on it.

Really Trump supporters? You think it's ok for a candidate to say things that are false if they can get away with it?

If either candidate were to make up something completely out of thin air and the other could not rebut it (because it was invented), then that be fair? Moreover, desirable?

This isn't an exercise in rhetoric . This is about choosing a pesident.

I'm pretty sure debates are exercises in rhetoric.

Bloomberg is going to be doing on-air fact-checking, posting scrolls across the screen, live. Or so they claim; I won't know 'cuz I don't get the network here.

For those of you scoring at home, I believe Kellyanne has implemented the patented sunmaster scoring system.

It's called fairness. Let's take a possible Trump statement:

"It's nice to be here at Hofstra. I remember when I did my graduate work here with Hawking and we worked out the new immigration policy."

By the sunmaster system:
1. He's at Hofstra. Completely True
2. You can't say he's not happy to be there. Completely True.
3. Are you calling him a liar? Debatable, but cannot be proved false. Partially True.

10 points each for 1 and 2, -3 for 3. Statement does not merit a liberal leaning and slanted "Pants on Fire".

ETA: Someone in my cable provider likes me. They just switched off of some bad movie channel onto Bloomberg. Since it's either that or Fox - I will go with Bloomberg.

Awaiting the combatants. Let's see if one or the other tries to upstage the other. I vote for them entering at the same time.

Does it sound like Donald has a head cold to any one else or is my feed bad?

I think you misunderstand how it is supposed to work. Example just now, moderator asks Trump, how will he accomplish bringing factories back. Trump rambles for 2 minutes without answering the question. Moderator asks again.

That is indeed the moderators job.

Trumps already losing it. Tee hee.

"That's not true, that's not how business is done, more generalities."

Shifts to debt discussion. This from a man who who wants to spend and lower taxes.

I think Clinton is already making him look stupid.

He tried to over-talk her, she ignored him and kept talking.

Clinton: Trade is not the only issue in the economy.

At first I thought Trump was doing okay as far as being Trump goes, but Clinton really got under his skin and he looks like a child pretending to be one of the grownups. She made a great pivot from niceties to some good zingers, definitely took Trump off his rhythm.

Uh oh, Clinton is annoyed at Trump blaming everything on NAFTA.

She needs to stop him from interrupting.

Trump started out prim and proper.
But he's arguing and interrupting a lot now.
Clinton remains composed.

It's going to be a great debate :)
