Political Oppression in Wisconsin

Thing is, I don't much like politics, I just like certain topics that end up being posted in politics! Health care, insurance, and social theory, and economic theory are my interests, for the most part. It'll be a rare occasion where you find me posting in a thread about actual, you know, politicians and elections and stuff like that.

-On tape saying he thought about sending in fake protestors to cause trouble but didn't not because it it's wrong but because the risk of it being found out and backfiring was too high.

-Walker picked guy sets up separate network so that other hand picked walker staff working for county exec could spend half their work day (4 hrs) working for Walkers campaign. Walkers office is 6 feet away but he never noticed they spent half their day not doing the work they were supposed to and didn't notice they were ignoring their work computers and using laptops they brought in. Walker either knew or is utterly incompetent.

-Walkers Wisconsin Economic Development Corp (which uses taxpayer money to give business loans) lost loans and couldn't say who they gave them to or how much

-WEDC gave money to companies to create jobs, they shipped them overseas instead.

-WEDC gave loans to walker campaign supporters even thigh they didn't meet the requirements to be given a loan and now can't pay it back

-Walker tried to remove the Wisconsin Idea from UW Wisconsin that talked about the main goal to be the pursuit of truth. Tried to claim it was a drafting error and was caught lying.

-Currently trying to remove open record laws so the public can't get information about what the government is doing, largely because most of this stuff became known through open records requests. Tried to blame it on the legislature but was found out Walker was involved.

-Conservative judge tried to have all the evidence collected in one of the John doe investigations immediately destroyed.

If Walker and his staff don't like being investigated they should stop being so corrupt.

If Walker and his staff are so corrupt, it shouldn't take a secret, gagged investigation with no basis in legal theory or legal fact, to get to the bottom of it.

Government corruption gets investigated all the time, often successfully, and almost always without the kind of John Doe investigation attempted here.

Because no one ever gets away with something illegal or avoids repercussions because of loopholes or having someone else do the dirty work for you.

When things such as I've listed keep surrounding someone it's a pretty good indicator they aren't on the level.

Regarding john doe 1 which position do you take? That he was involved or that he is incompetent?

John Doe investigations as a thing are bad, but it's not like they just popped into existence for this case. Much like the rest of the police actions here, it's only getting denunciations because it's happening to the wrong class of people. Complain about the law only when it's an instance of your group having it used against them, and I am not necessarily filled with sympathy.

As for the investigation itself, I'm pretty much where The_Animus is, I think. Plenty of reasons to suspect corruption and investigate, even if it eventually turned out to be legal.

I don't know much of the details of this case, but I sure can see the downside of electing judges. I am reminded of the case in West Virginia (I think) where a bought judge over-ruled a decision that saved the "buy" millions of dollars.

Again, not knowing all the details, the John Doe investigations sound quite like what is authorized at the national level by our current anti-terrorism legislation, which both sides of the aisle are complicit in. In my view, it's a bad trend toward a 1984 society.

A John Doe investigation differs from a normal criminal investigation in that it replaces a grand jury with a single, supervising judge, and it imposes strict secrecy requirements on the targets of the investigation. That is, defendants in a John Doe investigation are not even allowed to explain to their neighbors and friends what's happening to them, let alone defend themselves in the media. Even if the investigation is conducted in good faith, the whole thing just sounds oppressive, if not wholly unconsitutional. Of course, in this case, the investigations appear to have been conducted in bad faith. As a consequence, they egregiously trampled the First and Fourth Amendment rights of conservatives in Wisconsin.



The article is a fascinating read. The issues involved are far larger than just criminally partisan prosecutors and judges. As the government promulgates more and more intrusive, arcane, and ambiguous laws, the power of prosecutors to harrass and oppress political opponents grows exponentially. Unfortunately, the people we empower to administer, execute, and uphold these laws are human, with all of the biases and weaknesses that that entails. By the way, liberals should remember that those humans are not always going to be like-minded political allies as they are in Wisconsin.

You mean this:

Rindfleisch, 43, of Columbus, was Walker's deputy chief of staff at the county in 2010 and spent a lot of time on campaign work for Brett Davis, a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, according to a criminal complaint. Rindfleisch used a secret computer system set up in her courthouse office to communicate with Davis, campaign aides to Walker and other campaign workers. Davis is now state Medicaid director.

Rindfleisch's office was a stone's throw from Walker's in the county executive's suite.

For someone who isn't to be taken seriously, his opponents have certainly wasted a lot of energy on trying to defeat him, without any success. What does this say about Wisconsin Democrats?
