Poker Tournament at TAM4???

Is poker something like chess? Or is it more simple, like checkers...

At a certain level it is a simple game. At the high stakes 'World Skeptic's Series of Poker' it evolves into a highly complex world of high speed mathematics, risk/reward assessment and psychological profiling.

Truly the game of games.

Especially when combined with unlimited quantities of the beverage of your choice.

Au contraire, my antipodean friend: A miracle would be welcomed, even hailed.

You did see Mary in the Cheese sandwich, didn't you?
Well, I saw a fairly revolting looking toastie, if that's what you mean.

You're probably right; I could probably swing the rez-sickness deal. But I can't, fundamentally, be bothered doing so.

Tsk, tsk...never let real life interfere. :teacher:

Like this, you mean?

Well, I guess counting up to one a few times is sorta "high-speed mathematics"... ;)

ETA: I also read in a bit more emphasis on "psychological profiling", which some of these guys definitely need.

It actually is a very mathematical game on a certain level. One needs to be able to assess what one's opponent is holding, the odds to make the hand you need to beat their hand, and then compare those odds to what the pot is offering you - with a consideration as to what it will cost / what you may gain to play to see the last card. If I'm a 9:1 longshot to make the hand I need to beat the hand I figure you're holding and I'm only being offered 5:1 odds by the pot, then the mathematically sound move is (generally) to fold. And you need to be able to make these assessments 'on the fly'.

So - the average WWF wrestler would likely struggle with the finer points of the game. Although they could probably take me out back, put the boots to me and just take my winnings at the end of the night...

Note - Harley Race - a former NWA wrestler - is a fairly formidable poker opponent, and he's done quite well in a couple of mid-high stakes tourneys.

Well, to be fair, the mathematically sound move ignores the possibility of bluffing.

It's still good to know the odds, but you cannot guarantee that just because someone is better that they necessarily have a good hand...

Hence that I specified that its a mathematical game on a certain level. You need to combine the math with the psychology.

Like professional wrestling.

It's funny. I'm quite good at advanced analysis, but when it comes to games involving betting, my massive brain just goes >click!< and switches off. In short, I would have no idea what I was doing in a poker game, so I would be a total sucker and an easy mark. And my wallet doesn't stretch far enough to cover such misadventures... ;)

Between the scheduled events, the unscehduled events, and the Skepchicks at both, my time is limited... but I would love to be in on that.

With all the time you should be putting into writing my introduction, I can't imagine you would have even a moment to spar for playing poker.

Hey Zep, it's $25 bucks, not a fortune we're looking at. Jeez, are all Aussies as tight as Scots? :p ;) ;) :D

Deal me in Antique Hunter. My guess is rebecca will want in on the action too, and IIRC, BigShoeStu is also a poker player.

Hey, I'm both an Aussie and a Scot, and the only reason I'm not coming is due to geographical displacement. :)

I'm so totally in it for TAM5, unless you guys totally screw it up and it is decided never to repeat this grand experiment.

Hey, I'm so totally unaligned with how to play the game that I may as well throw $25 in the middle and walk away without being dealt a hand. In which case, I would probably rather put it all in a slot-machine - at least, as an engineer, I can work one of those! ;)

OK - I'm still working through Email with the Stardust poker room - not anticipating any problems.

To confirm - so far we have:

Antiquehunter
The Bad Astronomer
Phil
Dunstan
Hutch

Maybes -

Zep
Rebecca
IIRC
BigShoeStu

That's enough for a one table event - it'd be great to get enough for two tables.

Does anyone know how to invite Penn & Teller & the other guest attendees of TAM4? Since Penn just played a televised event for charity he may want to sit in on a REAL game...

Will post confirmation from Stardust that its game on as soon as I have it, and also will post a suggested tourney structure for debate...

You'd be surprised sometime. When I was in Cairo last week, the hotel had a Casino (actually about 14 slot machines and a half-dozen table games for the guests--Muslims aren't supposed to gamble). I played Blackjack one night and one of my colleagues was watching and asking about the game and how you do this and that. I finally told him to go ahead and try it himself, so he pulled out $20 bucks and sat down----and promptly won $60!!!
Dude hit every hand, and when he had a bad one the dealer busted. Hit every doubledown he had. Haven't seen a run of beginners luck like that ever.

Me, I broke even. Story of my life...;) :D

Blackjack I do understand (but the betting still flumoxes me!). Poker - just cannot get the hang of it, count me out. :(
