Perry wants us to pay for his stunt

Remember the incessant calls from John Boehner about how "we're broke"?

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2012...the-closer-we-are-to-going-over-fiscal-cliff/

“Let’s be honest. We’re broke. The plan we offered is consistent with the president’s call for a balanced approach,” said the Ohio Republican. “We’re still waiting for the White House” to do the same.”
“Longer the White House slow walks this process, the closer we are” to going over the fiscal cliff, Boehner said.

Apparently, that was so last week, because now presidential hopeful and serial dork Rick Perry wants to mobilize 1,000 national guardsmen to to stand around doing nothing on the Texas border in the chance they run into a small child in need of shelter...so they can send him back. And he wants you and me to pay for it.

"Texans are willing to put boots on the ground, but we expect Washington to foot the bill," he said.

Abbott expects the federal government to do the "right thing," and doesn't anticipate any litigation.

Fiscal conservatism at its finest. With a dash of xenophobic immigrant bashing on side, of course.

:boggled:

I could be wrong, but I don't think Perry is motivated by xenophobia. "Increased border security" can also be read as "pork for border states." The Guard has come and gone on the border and I'm not informed enough to really understand the funding/chain-of-command issues regarding the Texas deployment. But, Texas grants certain illegal immigrants the benefit of in-state tuition. The closer you are to the border, IMO, the more likely you are to understand how complex these issues really are.

People who aren't fomenting xenophobia usually don't pose for photo ops like this.

Right, why should the Federal Govmint pay for boarder security. It's not like it's their responsibility or anything like that.

I really don't know where Perry is coming from. Being against the feds/for the military seems relatively safe for a Texas politician. I tend to believe Perry is with George W. Bush on this one but again, I could be wrong.

Stupid stunts are stupid.

Precisely. This supposed "crisis" is due to undocumented children fleeing violence in their home countries. How does posting 1,000 national guardsmen help this situation? Are they going to shoot the kids as they come across the border? And furthermore, the national guard has no authority to arrest anyone, even if they stumbled across someone as they waste tax dollars sitting on their asses in the desert. So this is a transparent stunt, designed to goose up Perry's Teabagging primary voters for 2016. That's his right, but why would expect me to pay for his campaign gimmicks?

Why is border security stupid?

You (and others) seem determined to miss the point - so much so that in Bowling your average would be under 50 and in Baseball, .067 ..

The 1000 are not needed there - or nowhere else along the Border - and, as my wife who is more informed politically than I notes: it is apparently not in the purview of the NG to arrest, consolidate or transport illegal aliens. There is already an organization around that handles that (Border Patrol).. It is a waste of taxpayer money unless we are expecting 15 Mexican armored divisions making an amphibious assault on TacoTico or Chili's. This ios just Perry trying to be relevant. Which I am sure he would forget to pronounce/use correctly in the middle of a speech (you can lead a pol to meetings, but you can't make him able to think).

Perry probably thinks Posse Comitatus is something you catch in Tijuana.

I live about 90 miles from the border in tucson. I was 4wheeling the other weekend and encountered a group of immigrants. They wanted water, which I gave them, and then scattered into the desert. This has been happening since the treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo.

The children coming now are crossing the border and seeking out law enforcement because they are told being caught under age gives you a "permiso" to be in America. This is not immigration, it's refugees.

Adding national guard is pointless. Expanding border patrol makes sense but, correct me if I am wrong, we have done that.

Stupid answers are stupid, and jejune.

His answer wasn't stupid. In fact it clarified that the argument he was responding to was a straw man. It did for me anyway. If it had not, the subsequent posts would have.

It isn't that he wants the federal government to pay for it, although for someone who has argued so much for states rights, state control, and such that might be a tad hypocritical (I don't know all of Perry's views on it though so perhaps not), but that he wants the federal government to pay for something that has no plausible way to help besides as a political stunt for himself. What would the Guard do when they got there in the desert? Shoot the kids? Make them stay in the sand on the Mexican side? If he's suggesting the Guard patrol the boarder and rescue the kids, he's not made that clear at all.

Perry isn't taking any chances. He refuses to take any ownership of any of the possible actions. This is why that, despite being able to activate the Guard himself (for something like thirty days if I remember correctly), he's instead attacking Obama for not doing it. Obama by the way requires Congressional authorization to activate the Guard if I remember correctly. Why isn't Perry calling out Congress? Right, because he just wants to attack Obama.

So do you understand to objections better now?

You are right, it is the federal government's job. Which is why there is already a federal agency charged with border security (several, technically).

However, members of Perry's own party are holding up the funding for said agency. Now, Perry wants federal funding to deploy another agency that is not equiped, trained, or chartered to handle the situation. Said agency would be pretty damned useless in addressing the perceived problem.

How far will Perry push this stunt? Will Obama federalize the Texas National Guard just to keep Perry's hands off of them?

No need. Perry sends them to the border, they stuck their thumbs up and sit around for weeks or months looking foolish and wasteful. Perry blames Obama for "big government waste".

Then the monkey riding a bicycle takes the stage.
