France gives gift of photography to the world
August 19th, 1839: Louis Daguerre has received a lifetime pension from France in exchange for his recent invention, a process by which visual impressions from a camera are transferred to metal plates. France announces the technology is "free to the world" and the public first learns of photography.

I didn't realise it but we have a very old photo back into the 19th century that I've often wondered about because it is on a thin what looks like tin plate. Wondered why it was on a metal plate. It is of my great-great-grandfather so could be as old as 1860s.

Matthew Brady shot pictures on glass plates. There's a shot of a green house that used those (now discarded) plates as the panels. At the right angle I suspect they would look like tin to the viewer.

The Rydale Folk Museum in Hutton-le-Hole on the North Yorkshire Moors, has a photographers studio with windows made from glass photo plates.
It was built in York in 1902 by photographer William Hayes and moved with him to Hutton-le-Hole in 1911.
The entrance lobby is glazed using 140 old glass photo negatives stripped of their emulsion
It was moved to the museum in 1991

An accidentally epic repurposing that must have been truly amazing back in the day. I don't remember when the greenhouse I mentioned was built or demolished. It was scene in the video "The Civil War", by Ken Burns. (Like the US had the only one.)

Rydale museum is worth a visit. It includes a 'village' of buildings from around the moors rescued from dereliction or demolition and rebuilt.

We love the place and visit several times a year, it changes with the seasons, especially the farm that is worked with historical methods.
It's on the southern edge of the moors near Pickering.
