1913 Billboard publishes its earliest known chart, "Last Week's 10 Best Sellers Among Popular Songs." The #1 song is "Malinda's Wedding Day" by singers Byron Harlan and Arthur Collins, recorded in Camden, New Jersey.

Unfortunately it was released after Malinda's wedding so she couldn't use it.

They thought it would be more control surface up front. Caveat: I read their notes about forty years ago and didn't memorize much of it.

Canards can improve efficiency. After tailgates--horizontal stabilizers-- provide stability through negative lift. Canards do it through positive lift. Other considerations apply, of course.
Bleriot didn't, IIRC, provide for roll control, a major flaw.
