1916, German saboteurs exploded 2 million lbs of munitions stockpiled on Black Tom Island in New York Harbour for shipment to Britain and France. Seven people were killed and dozens injured. Damage was also done to the Statue of Liberty's torch arm, access has been closed ever since. The blast was felt up to 75 miles away and is one of the largest none nuclear explosions.

1917 First ever aircraft carrier deck landing.
Squadron. Commander. Edwin Dunning, 25, approaches HMS Furious (a Battlecruiser modified with a forward flight deck while under construction) from astern, pulls abreast, and slips his Sopwith Pup over the deck. Men on deck grab his wing straps and hold him down on to the deck. This was the first landing on a moving ship.



He was killed five days later, during his third landing attempt of the day, when an updraft caught his port wing, throwing his plane overboard. Knocked unconscious, he drowned in the cockpit.

Shortly after this the stern turret of Furious was removed and a second 'landing on' deck was fitted aft of the superstructure.



After the war, Furious was reconstructed with a full-length flight deck. Her sister ships Courageous and Glorious were also rebuilt as aircraft carriers around that time.



Furious served through WW2 mainly on convoy escort and aircraft ferry missions and was decommissioned in April 1945..
