Obama's economic plan - Soak The Rich

Well I live in a 4000 sq ft 5 bedroom house on an acre of land in suburban Houston. It is appraised at 200k. How much would the same house in California or NYC cost?

There is no such house in NYC, at least in Manhattan. Studios start for 400K. In my town that house would go for over a million. Just the lot would be worth 500K or more.

This is an incredibly stupid post.

First of all, who cares? Your blah, blah, blah house is NOT in California or NYC. In fact, it is probably impossible for your blah, blah, blah house to even exist in NYC. And if you want to transplant your house to some hell hole in the southern California desert it will cost one helluva lot less than 200K.

Or maybe we should get an Solar System real estate agent to assess the value of your property on Io. Or Ganymede. Or (up) Uranus.

It would be just as relevant.

You are sooo angry. The point is that to live in my house in NYC you would need a hell of a lot more that 250k to do it. Don't be envious, be ambitious. Live the dream. Life is not a zero sum game especially in the US. Get off your butt and compete. It's good for ya.

250k/per year under those conditions doesn't sound "rich" to me.

But whatever though. It doesn't even matter. 90% of the things you own cost the same in NYC or Podunk, Iowa. Probably more so because Podunk doesn't have a Wal Mart. Unless you're too rich to shop there. Think I'm getting a discount on my car because I live in Tennesse? Think I have $500 a month to spend on Japanese wood? **** outta here.

I don't get it, you see these people that have nice stuff trying to play it down like they don't. You should be proud of that.

Look back at my posts. I never claimed that I am not rich. I claimed that I do not feel rich. The examples from my lifestyle were to point out why that is so.
Holy crap. Lots of posts here have shown that you are, in fact, rich. But you don't feel rich (your emphasis). I can't type any more because of all the tears falling on my keyboard in sympathy for your feelings.

Given that my househould budget is <40,000 (and I survive reasonably comfortably, albiet with little left for savings) if you doubled my houshold income, then doubled it again, then added half of that total on top, I still wouldn't be making what he's making. From that perspective I don't think he's got a damn thing to complain about financially. He could afford more than 6 of my lives and he's complaining he can't get all the perks of his own.

Well, I'm impressed that you can support a family of 5 on a household budget of <40,000 and feel reasonably comfortable. Hats off to you. You must manage your money very well.

Well let's see. If you split your income evenly among your family, that breaks down to each of your five family members seperately having a larger budget than my entire income.

Nope, still no sympathy.

All of which makes any number of assumptions that you have no basis for.

I'm angry? If pointing out the idiocy of your post makes me angry, you're right.

I'm envious? If I had the assets of Bill Gates I would not live in NYC.

Get off my butt and compete? I've owned two successful companies and been a partner in an international consulting company. I'm now the President of a very successful non-profit corporation. Take your holier-than-thou attitude and shove it up where the sun don't shine.

He also pays NO federal income tax.

LOL

Shhh, don't tell him that! He might become so envious he'll switch places. However would I manage with a sextupled income if I'm in a high tax bracket.

Of course as a kindness to gdnp, I will gladly provide a list of 3 bedroom dwellings and better within the Upper West Side of Manhattan for less than $800000. Not houses of course, but trying to buy a house in the rich parts of Manhattan is fairly ridiculous. It isn't an area where people (other than the top .02% maybe) own residential houses. Oh yes, good schools too.

Ok. Let's assume that 3 of the 5 are children and your < 40k salary. You have 5 dependents that translate to 17000 deduction right off the bat and assuming , a standard deduction of 10,900, but if you itemise then it is likely higher especially if you have a mortgage not to mention the fact that you more than likely qualify for the EITC for 2 of your kids, the bottom line is that you likely do not have any federal tax liability.

If you do not pay federal income taxes I don't get why you should be griping about anyone not paying enough taxes.

Well gdnp just spun out a tale of woe about how hard it is to make ends meet on >$250 a year (my taxes are so high, the road tolls are going up, the full price of a good sized house in a swanky neighborhood is 3-4 years income, etc).

Given that my househould budget is <40,000 (and I survive reasonably comfortably, albiet with little left for savings) if you doubled my houshold income, then doubled it again, then added half of that total on top, I still wouldn't be making what he's making. sheesh

I don't begrudge him success in the least, but to hit the top 2% and then complain about money being tight .... no sympathy.

Careful, your envy is showing.

He didn't claim money was tight. He was describing his budgeting of expenses to compensate for his location and personal debt.

If you're in the top 2% richest people in the country, you're rich by any sane definition.

Ah yes, it's all in how you frame the issue. Skeptigirl would be proud.
